James Schramko here. Have you ever heard that expression “burn the ships behind you”?
It’s a war thing. It’s when you land on some foreign territory and you’re going to go and conquer it, the general would have the ships burned so that the troops couldn’t retreat. And a friend of mine posted this recently on social media, and I was thinking about this.
There is just one caveat to this that I can think of immediately and that is, make sure you don’t get on the wrong ship. If you’re going to burn the ships behind you, make sure you got on the right ship. Like, for example, people who got on the Titanic, they got on the wrong ship and it didn’t end very well.
So if you’re going to get on the boat to go and conquer the new land and you’re going to burn the ships behind you, make sure you got on the right ship. Because I’ve seen this thing with entrepreneurs very frequently. They get this business vision, they then start building it or build it, and then they don’t like it.
So make sure that you get on the right ship and then, by all means, burn the ships behind you. And the only way is forward but you’re in the right land to conquer.
