James: James Schramko here with John Lint from 10XPRO.io. Hey, John.
John: Hey, how are you?
James: Good. We’ve been covering some of the issues around making courses and memberships. A lot of people are using your platform, 10XPRO.io. We’ve published a course, OnlineCourseSystem.com, tackling some of the steps you need to do to create your own course or membership or information product.
And one of the big issues that we see, especially right out of the gate, is people go into this situation where they’re gathering and gathering and gathering and researching and learning and watching and buying and consuming but they never actually get to creating their own course. It’s simply a case of later often means never, and we want to turn the tide on that. So, I really am keen to find out from you some of the techniques that you advise students when you want to get them out of the analysis paralysis.
John: Yeah, I mean, that’s one of the biggest problems, right? People become spectators rather than taking action or taking part of the game. They just spectate and they’re just watching, analyzing. Then there’s the internal discussion that kicks in. And then there are all the doubts and fears, all of that.
At the end of the day, what it means is, like you said, later usually means never. Because you start overthinking everything, right? Like, hey, what should be the perfect domain name for my website? Yes, a domain name is important. Yes, you want a good name. But if you get started with a name that is not that great, the most important thing is for you to get started rather than get stuck into let’s wait for the perfect domain name.
Later, you know, just get started, take action, do something and then always review and improve things. And maybe, two months down the line, you find that perfect domain name, you just buy it. You just change things. It’s not a big deal. But what is a big deal is you not getting started, for you to wait around, for you to be overthinking things and because that just becomes paralysis. It means you’re not taking action, you’re not creating your online course, you’re not publishing it, you’re not getting any sale, you’re not making any money. And ultimately, it means that you’re not getting the freedom or the lifestyle that you want.
The domain name is a big one. I hear from our members, which domain name should it be? What should be the name of my course? Yeah, it’s important. And yeah, there are frameworks that we teach you as part of the Online Course System, but just pick a name. Just pick a name. I mean, Google, Apple, they’re stupid names. They are some of the worst names in the world. Who will call their own company Apple? It’s stupid but now it’s not stupid because they provide value, they have awesome products, people love what they do. So, I guess, calling my company a fruit is awesome. Why not banana, right? It’s the same thing. So maybe banana will be the hottest name in a few years. I don’t know.
But bottom line it’s all about the value you provide, you taking action, helping your members, creating that course, and getting into action, getting that momentum. Which is probably the most important thing of any business, getting momentum.
James: Yeah, so getting started instead of getting stuck. Some of the words that you look out for when you’re having conversations around this, I see this with students, they say, Oh, sometime later this year or next year. And I say, Hang on a minute, why? Why next year? What’s happening between now and next year? And we identify the steps and then it turns out, usually, there’s a sequence of steps and if you start with the first step, you can actually finish it really quickly.
When I was coming online over a decade ago, there’s pretty much a philosophy that you only ever one weekend in a motel away from your own information product. By that they mean, you drive somewhere out of the ordinary, lock yourself in a motel or a cabin by the lake for a weekend and pour a pot of coffee. And don’t leave until you’ve created your product.
Now, with tools like OnlineCourseSystem.com, it’s a course that you can actually follow step-by-step, you are literally a weekend away from your own course. If you’re talking about next year or later in the year, or sometime down the track then you might be stuck so think about taking that course. Use tools like 10XPRO.io which make it really easy for you to go live and to have the ability to collect money and to plug in your email autoresponder, and as you said, John, the opportunity cost. If your course is going to make you, let’s say, $5000 a month then every month you leave it, it’s costing you $5000. So get stuck into it. Start instead of being stuck.
Hope you’ve enjoyed this episode. I’m James Schramko, that’s John Lint. See you on the next one.
