In this quick tip, James shares an unconventional approach to making the most of the time that you have.
James Schramko here. I want to have a different take on the idea of maximizing your hours.
Recently, a client was talking about how they’d like to try and maximize every hour. In other words, they’re working every hour because in their mind maximizing means working. I would like to put forward a different point of view.
I think you can maximize your hours by doing the thing that is most effective to get the results you want to get. Now, for me, sometimes maximizing my hour might be best spent actually sleeping. Lately, I’ve been feeding a baby at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning with some express milk and I find a little nap in the afternoon is a better use of an hour than to do an extra hour’s worth of work.
So think about that. I know it was covered in Kolbe’s 7 Habits for Highly Successful People. One of them is: sharpen the saw and I truly believe that. So if you want to maximize your time, think about what’s the most effective use. Another one for me is, to go surfing. That’s when I get my creativity, it’s when I can really percolate an idea, it’s when I can release frustration if I get annoyed by something. I can just let it simmer out and dissolve into the ocean. So for me maximizing that hour is engaging in that activity. So it doesn’t have to be work. A blunt saw is not going to chop down the tree any faster than a really sharp saw which is used less frequently.
