James: James Schramko here. Welcome back to SuperFastBusiness.com. And this is Episode 646. I’m chatting with my good friend John Lint from KLEQ.com. Welcome back.
John: Hello, everybody. Hi.
James: Our Membership Series is gaining a lot of traction of people talking about it. They’re certainly giving KLEQ a test drive, which is great, John, and they’re getting great results, which is even better. I’m having an interview soon, with a KLEQ.com member who’s also a member of SuperFastBusiness. And she’s been doing tremendously well with her course. So that’ll be pretty exciting to talk about.
We’ve covered a lot of ground so far. And the previous episodes, which are everything from validating your membership idea through to retention, attraction, behind-the-scenes, support, online courses, technical stuff. And of course, the last episode we did in this series was the ultimate membership site checklist, which is hugely popular. Today, we’re going to talk about a few sort of technical innovations. And you were mentioning to me recently, you had a brand new feature roll out that up until now has been a paid add-on for most people, like the service that I’ve been using to do what you’re now able to offer members. Let’s talk about technology, and what sort of innovations make your own membership or course infrastructure powerful compared to some of the other tools that you could use out there.
Making sure they consume
John: Yeah. I mean, you know, we’re always listening to members and always trying to find out what is it that is going to help them take their business to the next level, what are those key features that can help you boost your conversions, can help you re-engage a member, can help you, you know, bring people back to your website, whether it’s the public, so you can, you know, bring them back to maybe your sales page or an offer that you might have, or your members, right? Because once they become a member, it’s very important for you to re-engage and bring them back to your membership site, you want them to consume your content, right?
Most of the times, you know, people buy something, and then they’re going to forget about it, or they’re going to get busy. So our job as content creators or as information publishers is to really help them get results. And to do that, we need to make sure that we can bring them back.
Why push notifications are cool
So one of the cool things that we released recently, actually this week as we record this, is basically web push notifications. Basically, it’s browser notifications. And what does that mean? Well, you might have seen these in different websites. When they go there, they ask you, hey, do you want to allow notifications? So the idea is that there’s a lot of people who do that. So yeah, I want to allow notifications. And that way, it’s almost like they subscribe to get notified by your website. And when they do, then you are able to send them real quick reminder messages, which are called push notifications. And in this case, it’s a browser notification.
So the cool thing with that is that now you can really re-engage them. And what we do is that we have two levels – we have the automated level, and then we have the live level, where you’re actually doing the manual level. The automated level is pretty cool, because as a membership site owner, you’re really going to enjoy that. Because, for example, whenever there’s an activity, then your members can be automatically notified by the website that, hey, this happened, and they will see that little bump up in their computer. So if there are other computers, on their desktop, they will see, okay, wow, there’s this happening, or this happened since my last visit. So now we can go and check out maybe the replies that they got in the forum, or maybe someone subscribed to their message, someone sent them a private message, or maybe you are using that awesome feature that we have, which is called the private chat with the owner, which is kind of like private coaching. Well, in that case, whenever someone replies, then you will need to be notified. So that’s a great way to add this to your membership site, to bring people back.
Another way I use it and our members are using it is, for example, whenever you are doing, let’s say you’re doing weekly calls, or monthly calls with your members, coaching sessions, or Q and A sessions, well, you can definitely send them an email telling them, Hey, I’m going to be live and all that. And that’s great. But now what you can do, you can, of course, send a broadcast web notification. And in that case, you can say, “Hey, guys, I’m going to be live in one hour,” or “Hey, guys, I’m live now, go here.” And when you do, you basically press a button in your KLEQ.com site. And then everybody will basically get that notification on their browser saying, Hey, John is live now. And then when they click, they can go to the page, the actual page where you are doing that live presentation.
It’s all built in
And everything I’m describing is basically now built in with KLEQ.com. You don’t need to buy anything else, you don’t need to try to mess about with scripts, and integrate and connect with another app, it’s all built in. It’s part of the admin area, you go to a new section that we called web notifications. And that’s it, you just go there, you write your message, click Send, and now everybody who subscribed can get in. So it’s a really powerful strategy. Because as you know, the more people come back, the more people consuming your content, the more people go through your course, that means the more people will get results. But that ultimately means more satisfied customers, it means more testimonials, it means that more people are talking about your stuff. And that ultimately means that you make more money, because you will increase your sales.
“The more people consuming your content, the more people go through your course, that means the more people will get results.”
It’s a really powerful strategy, and it’s something that you can really add quickly, there is nothing to cost you anything, like I said, it’s all built in, and it allows you to really bring that engagement back with your current members.
The possibilities
Something that’s really cool is that we have also added that for the public interface. So I’ve talked about the members, but you can also do that in your public pages. For example, you could have, for example, a page that has just contacts, right? And let’s say they are not members yet. Well, they can accept those notifications. And now you can bring people back by sending public notifications.
So with KLEQ.com, within the new feature, you can select – who do I want to send that message to? Members? All members? Or maybe you want to send to members of a specific course, or you want to send to non-members. And if you’re sending to non-members, you are basically trying to attract people back. And ultimately, you want them to, obviously, opt in. That will be number one. And the second thing will be, you want them to purchase something, right? So you can use that as a marketing tool as well, to bring people back to your offers, and to motivate them to purchase or subscribe to your email list. So very, very powerful. And I look forward to see what our members are going to do, these different strategies that they’re going to use. It’s going to be awesome, and I think we’ll definitely talk about this in the future, for sure.
James: Yeah, at the moment, I’ve had to glue together a whole bunch of different programs to get a similar effect. So I can push notify via an app, I can push notify via desktop notifications, which is a separate tool that you have to pay for and integrate. And that’s usually pushing automatically when there’s a new podcast episode. It will notify the people who are subscribed to that. And that gets people coming back and listening to the stuff. That’s on the public front. On the private front, I’ve used another tool to broadcast in-app messages. And it can also send emails. Of course, most people have an email system, and you should be able to send emails. I still think emails are highly valuable.
John: Yeah. Of course.
James: So just to put that in perspective, I think we’re getting around about 65% open rate on our member emails, which is pretty good on the size of membership we have. And it’s nice to be able to send notifications to the public. I like the fact that when there’s a new podcast, it will pop a little bubble up for our users’ desktop, and they can see on their browser. And it seems to me from the software that I’m using that almost everyone’s using Chrome these days. And I have a pretty high desktop use, which is interesting, a lot of people are sitting at their computer, which is where I think they’re most likely to make a purchase of a high ticket program. But being able to access people in the browser is a great feature, especially if you can automate it, and especially if you have a specific, targeted, segmented campaign. So yeah, I’ve had to glue four different ways to be able to communicate to people, so it’s really good that you can build that in.
The financial aspect
John: And if you factor the cost of those, you know, I know that tool that you are talking about, and I know that one is at least $97. Another one is at least around 40 bucks.
James: One of them’s already $135.
John: Okay.
James: They’re not cheap anymore. And that one is doing in-app messaging. Some people use it for support desk, and some people use it for emails. It’s the only tool that I can find that will help me automatically follow up someone if they’re not active. And it’s also the one that’s super segmented by where people visit on the site, or how long they’ve been there, or which region they’re in. Those sort of features have been good. But you do pay for it, you pay a lot for it. So if you add my tech stack up, you’re going to get into the thousands per month. But you know, if you add hosting and all the tools.
John: For sure.
An all-in-one solution
James: And that’s sort of what comes up regularly in the questions that I’m getting is, but what about own the racecourse? What about, you know, all your content? Well, that’s a topic we’ve covered before. But it’s worth addressing here, what you’re really getting with KLEQ is all the tools rolled into one. And you still bring your own CRM system, and you still bring your own media wherever it’s stored. So those assets are owned wherever they’re owned, and they’re just pulled into your app and made presentable, but you have all the other components talking to each other. You’re not on Udemy’s platform, and you’re not on Facebook’s platform. So you’re not subject to big rule changes and stuff.
KLEQ is designed at the core to be a highly sophisticated funnel machine that can deliver courses and membership content, and it had to be toned down to make it user-friendly, not in terms of powerful features, but the way that you communicate what it actually is. It’s actually a lot more powerful than people realize. And we covered that a bit in the previous episode.
John: Right.
James: So I love that you’re building in these tools, like you’re actually cherry picking all of the individual components that I’ve used in the past, whether it’s survey type tools, deadline type tools, push notification type tools. You’ve got a whole myriad of segmentation and pixel embedding, and SEO customization that people probably never use, unless they’re at the high level. And if they are at the high level, then it’s great to be able to use one platform for this.
John: Yeah. And that’s what we do, as well. We have, like you mentioned, we have different kinds of entrepreneurs in our system. We have people who are starting out, others who have been doing this for a while, and they are, you know, building their six-figure business. And then we have really advanced players who are doing those crazy campaigns. And that’s something that people might not realize, that that’s actually my background. I started doing really advanced campaigns for high-level clients. And I still do that. And that’s why we built that platform, so we could do all of those things, all of these advanced automation, the advanced segmentation, without having to purchase 10 new tools, getting the team to try to figure out how to integrate everything. So, you know, it was just a waste of time and a waste of money.
So the idea was like, Okay, let’s have one tool that we built, to be able to just click a button and have everything that we need right there, you know, that was really the idea. And then it grew and grew, and then more people got in, and we started to add more things based on members feedback. And this is one of them, you know? This is just one more feature that we have. And it’s because, for example, I do weekly coaching calls for KLEQ.com members. So every Thursday, Australia time, I am live, which is Wednesday night, USA time. I’m live and I do a coaching session, and I do Q and A calls, it’s pretty cool. And we have fun, and I share my screen and show some cool stuff.
But I found that, you know, I kind of wanted to notify people about that. I wanted to let them know, Hey, I’m live or Hey, I’m doing this. And email is great, and of course, this is not to replace emails, you always want to have an email strategy. An email is basically the heart of your online business. But it’s something that will supplement it, because I don’t want to send four reminder emails telling people that I’m live, or four reminder emails about specific things. So what I can do with push notification, because it’s just a popup that comes in, you can mix them together. So you can send an email, and then when you are about to go live, you can say, Hey, guys, I’m live, and you’re using that feature to bring people back. So it’s very powerful. And yeah, you know, we’re seeing more people show up, more people consuming the content. And that’s what it’s all about, right? At the end of the day, it’s get people to come back and help them get results.
Reminding members what’s there
James: Yeah, and I’ve talked about that in the retention episode. It’s just critical to get people back and to continue to consume. The number one reason why someone might leave a coaching program, where there’s any kind of coaching involved, is to say that they’re not using it and not taking advantage of the thing they’ve purchased. So it is good if you can actually help people.
John: Yeah, and I mean, you know, look at, for example, SuperFastBusiness. It’s an amazing, membership site, amazing community, amazing offer, I mean, you know, people get to contact you personally, James, and get your help. But I notice that also, you consciously remind people that hey, there is private coaching, right? There is private coaching in SFB, and you have that in your email signature. So it’s very important, even though you might have an amazing offer, and you have all the tools and everything is there in the membership area, our job as content creators and membership site owners is to always remind our members, hey, this is where you get this, this is where you get that, this is how you can get in touch with me, remember those bonuses that you got. Because people tend to forget and like you said, that’s why they will then cancel and leave later.
James: It’s like, for example, yesterday, I did some training, which was how I doubled my sales, using a special abandonment sequence that I’ve completely re-engineered. And I went through and explained to members why I made the change, exactly what changes I made, how the results were, which was double; what else I did that might have impacted the results, because that’s kind of important as well. And then I shared it with them.
We’ve been talking about this training coming for the last month. We did the training yesterday, and then we will communicate that through our news channels and notify members that it’s there. Because if they watch the training, and implement even a fraction of what I share with them, and if they don’t already have it in place, which I’m pretty sure nobody will have in place, they can expect to increase their sales from the existing traffic they have. So it’s in my interest to be able to get in front of them and make sure they know it’s there. It’s the greatest training available right now on the internet for someone who has a checkout page or a sales page where they’re not following up properly. And if they don’t know it exists, it’s as if I didn’t do it at all. So that’s why having the ability to notify people and say, “Hey, there’s a brand new training available for you, check it out,” you can pop up a message and link people straight to it, that’s a really good feature to have.
John: Awesome.
“Someone starting today has a better chance of succeeding faster.”
James: John, that’s a really great feature. Thank you for sharing that. And I can see how this is good. I mean, I’m already using a feature like this, it’s just like, you keep coming along and rolling up the best technology into one place. So it’s such a great advantage. In fact, someone starting today has a better chance of succeeding faster than I did, because I had to glue all these things together over a series of years. In fact, it’s been 10 years now. So you end up collecting a few bits and pieces in that time. It’s easier if your website membership portal builder just does it all for you, and then tells you it’s here, which is great.
Is that really your job?
John: Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, that’s what we do, you know? Because I think as an online entrepreneur, when you get started, you see that you have all these things that you need to do. That’s something I talk about with members, and it’s very important. If you want to be successful, you need to stop doing bad work. And bad work is all the stuff that is not going to grow your business – trying to be a tech guy, trying to integrate things, trying to play with plug-ins, that’s not a good use of your time. That’s actually doing bad work. You don’t want to be doing bad work. If you can use a tool that’s going to help you, and whether it’s KLEQ.com or something else, that’s totally cool.
“Bad work is all the stuff that is not going to grow your business.”
Hopefully, you listen to this episode and you think, you know what, yeah, that makes sense. I’m going to get leveraged. I’m going to find tools. I’m going to find solutions. And like James talks about all the time, I’m going to hire someone, maybe, to help me do things that are not a good use of my time. And doing the tech stuff, that’s my job. That’s not your job as an online entrepreneur. I have an army of developers, that’s our job. Let us do the tech and you focus on what matters, doing the good work. And the good work is creating products, helping your audience, crafting offers, and obviously, making sales. That’s what I want people to focus on. Let us deal with all the tech stuff, so you never have to deal with tech overwhelm, frustrations, and struggle with plugins and things like that. That’s my goal. That’s my mission. I’ll do it so you don’t have to do it.
Something to look forward to
James: Yes, that sounds amazing. So how about in a future episode, we talk about some of the frameworks that you’re using to help members get going. Because I know even when I look at parts of my business, for example, the sales page or putting together new collateral, you could be staring at a blank screen. It’s good if you have frameworks. I was lucky that Kevin Rogers came along and spoke at SuperFastBusiness Live and gave us a card system that we’ve been using inside SuperFastBusiness membership. However, I’m sure there’s other frameworks. And you must have something that you’re sharing with members, and it might be good to go through a couple of them, at least talk about what kind of frameworks you have, even if we don’t go into them in great depth, just so that people could be aware of what sort of assets would be handy.
John: Totally. I mean, that’s also my job. Now, we were talking about re-engaging people and something that’s very important. Whenever you sell access to your online course, or to your recurring membership site, the job is not done. Your job just started. You know, our job today is to bring people back and what we call onboarding them. You want to have a good onboarding sequence where you’re going to remind them, Hey, this is where you get that, this is what you can do first. So we have a ton of training programs in what do we call the KLEQ.com Academy. You know, anything from how to create a course, how to build your email list, how to get your first 500 to 1000 subscribers, how to craft a good sales video, and a good sales ladder, how to get traffic, you know, all of those things that you receive whenever you become a KLEQ.com member. These are extra bonuses, and I deliver them in an organized way.
A point of focus
When someone becomes a member, I want them to focus on, okay, what is it that you want to do first? you want to create your first page? You want to create a funnel? Do you want to create your first online course? What is it? And then focus on that. And then later, if they stay after five days, for example, I’m going to tell them, hey, by the way, here’s some extra tips. And then for example, 10 days later, I can start talking about how to craft a powerful sales video. So all of those things are available for KLEQ.com members, and we have a ton of frameworks that we that we use to help you do that, you know? How to create an awesome course, without spending a fortune on gear and tools. So that’s something that we call the content creation bootcamp. So, all of that is templated, there are swipe files, there are checklists and blueprints. And all of that is basically trying to do it again, step by step. That way you can just focus on okay, I want to focus on building my list. Okay, great. Then do that.
Because my biggest challenge with KLEQ.com is not to try to convince people of how awesome it is. Because we have so many features, it’s really to try to give people clarity. Like, yeah, you have all of that. But you don’t have to learn all of that right now. I don’t want you to do that. Because if you do, you’re going to get overwhelmed. And you’re going to be confused, because you might hear someone like James talk about, oh, segmentation, and then automation. Should you do that first? Well, no, it depends on where you are in your business right now. So the most important thing in my job at the very beginning whenever people become a member is to give them clarity. And I do basically a private coaching session for all members who come in, by the way, that’s what I do. Some ideas for you guys, if you are listening to that, you know, what are the things that you can easily do? And basically, we go over, hey, what are your main challenges? What do you want to do next? What’s your first goal? And then from that, you get, you know, clarity on what is your next step.
And then I direct them basically through the different frameworks and blueprints that we might have to help them out. So yeah, I mean, there’s a ton of things that we can talk about, you know, things like how to create courses, how to craft an offer, how to boost your sales, how to get more traffic, things like that. And yeah, I think that would be good stuff for the next episode that we might record.
James: Fantastic. Well, there we go. That’s Episode 646, full transcription available. I recommend you check out KLEQ.com. It’s the software solution that I prefer for my members to be using. And there’s a Membership Series available at SuperFastBusiness.com in the Popular Podcast Series. We were actually racking up a few episodes here, John, and getting great results for customers, and that’s what it’s all about.
Thank you so much for sharing.
