James here coming at you from the car park of the hospital where I’ve been spending a lot of time this week.
And not for bad reasons, for a good reason – the birth of my baby daughter, so very, very exciting. But one thing that struck me- well, there’s been a few things actually, but one big thing is, how much of a team it takes to run a hospital. They’re on shifts, they exchange shifts, they hand over notes, they explain things to their team, their co-workers. They get a full brief instructions, they create plans for the patients and they let them know what’s happening. So there’s so many lessons about how to deal with the client, how to run the business as a system.
There’s been a few other lessons for me too, as an entrepreneur.
I’ve been fortunate that I could spend most of my time here and my business was still running in the background. My team was still sending out podcasts, they were still doing email, weekly news updates for clients and all this good stuff. So very fortunate. Certainly, a big difference than the first time around when I had kids, when I was racing off to my day job, seven days a week and coming to hospital for a little tiny visit.
So if your life is not how it should be right now, I encourage you start building out systems, start documenting things, get your own business. It will transform your life and get you that degree of flexibility and systemisation that allows you to actually enjoy the moments because that’s really the big lesson for me from visiting this hospital.
I’m able to be present and enjoy every smile and every gurgle and that’s what it’s all about.
