Tune and market your online offer with help from James
If there was ever a time to get into the online marketplace, it’s now. In this SuperFastBusiness episode, James has brought back fellow online marketer, KLEQ‘s John Lint – together they go through 11 things that they and others have sold and are selling on the internet.
If you can teach, you can sell this
An online course is something that people traditionally think of when it comes to online products. There are different kinds of online courses, but what usually comes to mind is a vast, multiple-module, multiple-lesson affair. This can easily put would-be course-creators off. The fact is, however, this is not the only option.
Large courses are called master classes. They are an advanced and rather involved type of course made of many pages, modules and lessons.
“A lot of people make their first training difficult, but it doesn’t have to be.”
Luckily for the beginning course creator, there are also what are called one-page courses. One page, that’s all you need. In John’s software, KLEQ, such a course can be composed of a welcome video on top, followed by lesson blocks. You click on a lesson block, it expands, and you have the training there.
A one-page course can be made up of five to 10 lessons. Twelve would be a maximum. John recommends not getting things too crowded. It’s one of the fastest ways to sell your own courses online – just create that one-page course.
Now if you want to go deeper, teach more, and create a more premium type of online course, you might do maybe an eight-week type of training program, with multiple modules. This would be a master class.
A master class is basically an online course with more pages. So imagine a one-page course times five – five modules, five pages of lesson content.
James agrees it’s a quick way to get started online. His SuperFastResults site is a collection of courses for sale. The bulk are an hour long, and are made up of a page broken into modules. His team find it very easy to load them up and add transcripts, etc.
There’s also a 30-day course, free at the moment, at SuperFastResults.com/30. It’s made up of different lessons per page. As people get an email each day for 30 days, it takes them to the next lesson, which sort of unlocks. The aim is to take someone from where they are now to being able to work less and make more, within 30 days.
“Taking advantage of a deadline can be great.”
How easy was it to make? James recorded 30 videos in one sitting. He then put them into a folder for his team, who loaded up one video per page. They then ran it through software to get it transcribed, and then cleaned it up, ready to go. The hardest part of the whole thing was James checking the emails. He realized people were going to want to just read the emails as well, so he had the full transcription there.
The actual tech side and deployment of the online courses was simple. And SuperFastResults now contributes several surfboards’ worth a month of revenue to the business from just courses and a micro recurring program, which will be mentioned later.
John mentions that courses can be free as well as paid. Courses given away can help build your email list while providing a ton of value. James has both types, a free one being his lifestyle design course at SuperFastResults. When people take the free training, it’s also a chance to let them know what other offerings are there.
In terms of implementation speed, one of the challenges people run into with courses is having to set up their sales part somewhere, and then the delivery somewhere else. This necessitates a separate program, or a module, or a plugin, or a Zapier link, etc. Or they build on someone else’s platform, like Udemy, which take a sizable cut of sales. In a previous episode, James and John touch on differences in access and control.
The beauty of John’s KLEQ software is that you can have your front and back end all in one machine. You can just finalize everything and have it in a single place, making it very easy to get started. John, in fact, has a course underlining just how easy, Your Course in a Weekend.
James himself for the past 17 months has turned out a training a month for his community. He typically comes up with the idea or concept a day or two before presentation. He then takes a few hours to create it, five or six hours tops. Then he delivers it over the span of an hour.
The trainings are now available inside SuperFastBusiness membership. A few are courses for sale in SuperFastResults.
It doesn’t get simpler than a download
Digital downloads are the next thing you can sell. If even a one-page course strikes you as work, you can create a simple resource, a report or cheatsheet as a PDF, for instance. Make the file available for download and accept payments for access.
An XSitePro cheat sheet was one of James’s very first online products. He recalls the trouble he ran into was having to keep changing the link so that people couldn’t share it.
John has worked on a number of solutions in KLEQ. One is called the guardian, which locks public pages so that only people with a key can access them.
The customer is given a special URL via email when they buy. When they click the link, the key is there, unknown to them, and they will land on the page. If they share the URL with someone, however, the other person won’t have the key, and will be redirected.
Another solution is with KLEQ’s advanced integration with your CRM system, i.e. Ontraport, Infusionsoft, ActiveCampaign, AWeber or ConvertKit. There is basically a feature that will allow page access only if you have a specific tag in your profile in the CRM. If you don’t have the tag, you will be redirected.
James and John mention that you can actually create a funnel for your digital download inside KLEQ. They’re called campaigns, and they have about 20 of them pre-built into the software.
You click a button, select your campaign – quick sale, limited sale, book funnel, webinar or what have you – click a box, and presto. All the pages you need are set up. You simply fill in the content, and load your product.
Live training as an online product
Number three is webinars, basically live training programs. A lot of John’s members do this as a sort of pre-screening of their online course. They set a date and time, sell access, and provide the link.
The audience attends, learns, and asks questions that the presenter can answer. The session is typically recorded, and can be given to the paying customers as a replay. In the process, the presenter has pretty much also created his own online course, which he can sell forever.
Webinars can be what’s called a hybrid, a combination of live and pre-recorded material. This means the teaching part is recorded, but the introduction and Q&A are live.
You can actually deliver a webinar inside KLEQ and use all its features, including protecting the page.
The expanded version of a webinar
Number four is an expansion of the webinar, what’s called a virtual summit. This is made up of multiple webinars, or sessions. Like a webinar, it can be live, or it can be a hybrid, or it can be fully pre-recorded. The series of webinars takes place on a specific day (or span of days) and time, and typically involves a number of presenters.
A lot of people now are attending virtual summits. In a virtual way it provides something of a community aspect, and also a live training experience.
Need coaching? Let’s chat…
Next is one-on-one coaching via chat. You simply sell access to a private chat, where you can coach your clients.
James has done very well with this model. When he was new online he couldn’t understand the gurus who would sell a $3K course and never even show up once to their own Facebook group. It’s still many times the case, but on a positive note it’s given him the opportunity to stand out.
John has made this product more powerful with an add-on app for his members. It basically gives people coaching in their pocket. After purchasing access, they can send a question any time, directly. It’s added leverage for the coach as well, who needn’t spend a half hour weekly on Zoom with their client.
Private coaching can be a product all on its own, or it can be a value-add. X weeks’ access, for instance, when someone buys a course or master class.
It’s also very easy to set up. No need to create a course or videos. Just set up one page, call it private coaching, and you’re done.
Q&A in an online group setting
Number six is much like the private coaching, but the questions and answers are visible to other people.
James has created a membership from this concept, using the social wall feature in KLEQ. The product is very straightforward. For $10 a month, people can ask their online business questions, and James or his team will answer them. The program, at SuperFastResults.com, is called Support Assist.
John has continuously developed the feature for James, now allowing him to use it from his phone.
“Most people just want their questions answered.”
People love the value and simplicity of the product. Some have said to James they feel like they’re ripping him off at the price. All they get, and all they need, is to have their questions answered and their problems solved.
When people want access to each other
Number seven is community. Sometimes people crave the social aspect. This can be achieved in a couple of ways. The social wall, for instance, as offered in Facebook and KLEQ. Or the more common forum setup. If you have some sort of online social interaction that you can package and offer exclusively, you can create and sell a community.
Number eight is related: networking. You’ll see this with advanced or private groups, where what people really want is access to each other.
What John sees some of his members do is they leverage the members’ directory feature in KLEQ. This is simply a list of all the members, with built-in messaging options. If someone takes an interest in another member, they can start off a conversation.
The right connections are valuable, and access to a networking group or to a members’ directory is something you can actually sell.
As a sidenote, James observes that six and seven are terrific sources of content ideas, if content creation is part of your business model. And before you stress over what to put in your forum, know that members and their interaction will create a lot of the content and value for you, as they have for James’s paid community.
Put them all together, and you have THIS
One to eight are all elements you can sell on their own. Combine them, however, and you get number nine: a membership site.
A membership has one or more of the afore-mentioned components. You can have courses, you can have webinars every month. You can have networking built in, community aspect built in, the Q&A, the private coaching via chat. It’s really up to you what kind of membership site you want to build and what you want to include in it. And when you package them all together, that becomes your membership program that you can sell on a monthly, yearly, or six-month basis, whatever works for you.
This, for John, is the ultimate online business. On top of the one-time sales from the other products, you now have recurring income from the membership. Take James, for instance. He has his courses and Q&A in SuperFastResults, his coaching program SilverCircle, and he has his membership site JamesSchramko.
And all of this can be achieved in KLEQ – one website, one solution. No multiple connections or plugins. Whenever you’re ready, you add an element. Whenever you’re ready, you package it together. And then you add the different funnels. Plus you can track things very, very easily.
A very physical product you can sell online
Moving quickly to number 10, we have a very famous item: books. A book is what John calls an external product. A fantastic thing to sell online, and, James says, a great way to create a highly-converting customer.
KLEQ actually features a built-in book funnel that many of his members are using. It allows you to have an order page, a thank you page, a sales page, all of that – and be up and running very, very fast.
In John’s software, when a person buys, the order details get added to your CRM with a tag. From there, you can instruct your support team, or you can send the data with an API to any shipping house, which is what his members are doing.
With a book comes plenty of upsell opportunities. After a book sale is a very good time to promote a course or coaching. And one-click upsells, one-click downsells, one-click upsells with PayPal and Stripe, it’s all built into KLEQ.
Services and how to leverage
Last but hardly least are services. You can sell services online by simply having on your sales page, what is the service about? You need an order page, a thank you page, they buy, and then it’s up to you. How do you deliver your service, of course? That’s going to be separate.
A lot of service providers come to KLEQ with the idea that they’ll start by selling their service online, and they’ll have different sales pages and order pages. Then, little by little, as they work with their customers, they can start leveraging by creating a course, maybe an FAQ, that they can sell to prospects not yet ready, perhaps, for their services.
It’s a great way they can add value, too, to help people retain on a recurring service. They can upload valuable content, they could have monthly newsletters or a video update, industry insights. They could have checklists, frameworks, templates that go along with whatever service they provide. All with one tool.
A sneaky little bonus
Before ending, John jumps in with a bonus item. Number 12, if you don’t want to create your own things, is you can be an affiliate. You can sell other people’s products.
There’s a catch to that. When it comes to being an affiliate, a lot of people think, oh, I don’t need a website then. I don’t need a business. I don’t need a list. I can just tell people about the product. The reality is, at the very least, you need two things.
Number one, you need to have your own list. You need to have your own audience to promote other people’s products to.
And ideally, you want some control over that audience. So it’s your audience, not YouTube’s audience, or Facebook’s audience. How do you do that? You build an email list, and you provide them with awesome content in exchange for that email. Now they get to know you, like you, trust you. And if you want to promote other people’s products, you can do that.
How do you build your list? You need funnels, you need pages, you need a website, you need something that’s going to allow you to build your page.
The second secret to being what’s called a super affiliate, is to create digital content that you can give away as a bonus.
So if, for example, you’re pitching a great $4k camera, you can offer access upon purchase to one of the things talked about above. It might be a course on how exactly to use the camera, how to take specific types of photos. It could be a few Q&A sessions or private coaching. They get the extra value, and you get the commission.
Yes, we know it’s missing
In case you noticed, there’s one thing James and John haven’t covered. Obviously, you can sell ecommerce products online. Amazon do a great job of it. It is not, however, the specialty of either of our experts, and they’d rather not do or suggest something incorrectly.
With that out of the way, if you need help with anything on their list, James and John are happy to oblige. They do plenty of that stuff, and are good at it.
If you’ve got questions off today’s episode, please send them through [email protected] you for tuning in.
