James Schramko here. Today, I’m going to share with you what we can learn from Cinderella and how that can be so important for your productivity. If you recall the story of Cinderella, she goes off to a ball and at the stroke of midnight, her horse and carriage would turn into a pumpkin and I think there were rats or something like that. And the lesson here is midnight is a deadline where things change.
Now, I’ve found for my own productivity, if I make sure that I go to bed before midnight before I turn into a pumpkin then I will wake up the next day rested and in a great mode to move forward. And any time when I breach that, if I go past midnight, if I go to one or two or three then I have this hangover effect where I’m very unproductive. I might sleep in and it creates a negative cycle of productivity. I just can’t get stuff done if I have this sleep hangover or this deficit.
So, one thing that I did that was very handy was set an alert for 10 o’clock and that is a down tools alert. No more work after 10:00. That’s the great time to be doing your light and easy sort of stuff. Reading is an especially good activity to do and if that happens to be with a book that’s even better. That’s the wind-down. But make sure you set a hard limit. For me, midnight is when I turn into a pumpkin so I make sure I down tools and I’m starting my sleep by that stage.
I hope you enjoyed this. I’m James Schramko. More tips like this in Work Less Make More. It’s a book available on Amazon or you can download the Audible version if you like to listen to the book, and I read the book myself so I look forward to spending a few hours with you in your earbuds.
