James Schramko here. I’m at a conference, and one of the big things that they’ve been talking about is thinking way bigger, along the lines of Peter Diamandis, like XPRIZE. And an interesting thing came out in discussion and it was that if you choose a really positive mental model – even if it’s not true – there’s some science to suggest that you can actually experience the benefits of it.
The Placebo Effect
And that sort of reminded me of the placebo effect. If you were to take a placebo pill, and pretend that it gave you super powers, apparently some people would actually experience a lift in their self-belief, their self-abilities, and and they may actually achieve things that they may not have thought possible. I’m sure that a lot of athletes have mental games that they play or exercises that they do or visioning exercises that achieve this sort of result.
So one of the things that I’ll be bringing in in an upcoming episode is I’m going to be having a discussion with someone who does a lot of mind work stuff, and he’s behind some of the popular brainwave entrainment tracks that people use to clear their mind.
Are you a big thinker?
So I’m really interested in this topic. I’m wondering where you’re at in terms of what you’re planning for next year. Are you thinking big? Are you thinking normal, smart, achievable goals, or are you really going to lift the lid on it?
I’d love to know what your thoughts are so we can continue this discussion.
Well, I’m James Schramko. I’d love to have you comment right below this video.
Tell me what your big thinking is for next year, and let’s follow this thread and see how we go with it.

Hi James!
Wow–this has been on my mind a lot lately. I have recently gone in the opposite direction, so maybe I need to hear this.
My rationale is that I have a hard time getting myself to “buy in” to thinking HUGE, so I don’t think I am fully invested in those goals. I have scaled it back to things that I see as achievable from where I’m at right now. I am looking to for a series of “wins” to build upon each other like a snowball. And for each “win” my expectation of what my business can become, grows.
I am curious to know your thoughts on this!
Thanks!
Amy

Amy the comfort zone is seductive. It pulls you back in to avoid being hurt. If you succumb to it then you will continue to get what you have always got. If you want more then you need to set your sights higher. Try setting goals in the low medium and high range so that you can land somewhere in the zone.
Amy Boehnert says
Oh geez! You are right! I hadn’t even thought of it that way, so I am really glad to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you!!

SOLID GOLD!!! Thank you so much for recommending that interview! I hadn’t heard it before, and I got a tremendous value out of it!! Can’t wait to try. (Also wanting to tidy up my garage a bit, too!! LOL!)
James Schramko says
Very cool. I originally recorded that about three years ago and we brought it across here to live on
Michael Ippersiel says
Uncanny timing James. I just got around to watching Peter’s video on Abundance today (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BltRufe5kkI). I definitely need to think a lot bigger. I agree with the placebo stuff as well, the body follows the mind.

This fascinates me! Years ago I used Transcendental Meditation every day for a few years. It proved to be very powerful and my self development and business both improved dramatically. But then my mind sabotaged all that by creating multiple voices in my mind which drowned out the Mantra. Since then I’ve been a keen advocate of Brain Wave Entrainment. Good – but not as good as TM.
Also years ago I took up a Tony Robbins self development course based on ‘What you focus on you can achieve’. That turned my life around dramatically. Now I believe in “Thinking Big” will make extraordinary things happen in your life.
Why this surprises me so much I’m not sure – but I amazed to find my Thai wife thinks even bigger than me!! And now I am watching her ‘quite unbelievable ideas’ becoming reality! (One day I’ll write a book about all this!)
So having learned so much from James in Cabo MOBE Titanium event recently – to the point that I am definitely ‘one of his fans’ – I truly look forward to learning what James has in mind!!

Tim I think your Thai wife thinks big because she does not know not to. It is awesome!

I think you are right! In fact ‘spot on’. When I get time, I’ll tell you a jaw dropping story of what she has been up to! (Even I have recently had to use ‘duck tape’ to return my jaw to its normal place – on the lower half of my face!!)

very cool!

James!
an Inspiring video. thank you.
One of my major goals is to raise my personal standards, so that the self-belief is powerful enough to equal my vision. I realized recently that we don’t need to do complicated things to achieve that. A person may go to the places that exhibit incredible quality, harmony, precision, meet those who have created those results, see them in action (even to see great bridges, railway stations, precise railway tracks, simple, powerful skyscrapers, airports like Barajas in Madrid). and just listen to himself or herself. The immense pleasure you feel when surrounded by purposeful actions, when you actually see the strong, harmonious results, feel the deep admiration for a job well done, changes you internally.
It is the idea you talked about, the benchmarking.
I read Amy’s comment with understanding, I also had to scale down my goals in the past, because I simply did not believe in myself.
But, I just can’t live without being surrounded by the best, beacuse then you give the best to others too.
Three seminars are on the line, two in December, on starts in January, one major project, and most of all, many many new people ..!
Thank you, best wishes

Great video James I am loving the range of things you are sharing. The small snap shot just a couple of minutes is great. Similar to Tim I used to meditate and for some reason stopped ??!! Similar to Martyna I am looking at having a ‘clean’ goal next year…personal and business standards. Big goal is to double the business by Jan 2015. I don’t know how I will do that so I guess that means its a big Goal :)

Thank you for noticing the range of things I’m sharing. A light to bring you insert whatever I am up to wherever I am and even though it is a little bit of extra effort recording these as I go is substantially better in the long run. I’ll continue to do this

Hey James, great post. I am all about being positive and thinking big, but as you know better than anyone, that only manifests itself if you work your ass off! I am doing my best to think big and work hard and would LOVE to be able to support my family on just my income. The ultimate dream would be to create passive income so that I am not one of those dads that miss out on being a significant part of their child’s upbringing. I love my work and would not want to stop, but if I could get it down to 20 hours a week through automated systems and VAs, I would be psyched. I’ll keep on truckin’ and keep on being inspired by you. Cheers!

Great video James – definitely thought provoking.
It is interesting that a few replies mention personal development. If you are thinking big in terms of your business I think it is equally important to think big in terms of your self development including awareness, consciousness and creativity.
Most people’s physical reality is constrained to their (limited) 5 senses and their thoughts, and therefore goals, ambitions and notions of what is possible, is constrained by their mind. David Lynch describes this constraint: “If you have a golf ball sized consciousness, when you read a book you’ll have a golf ball sized understanding, when you look out, a golf ball sized awareness, and when you wake up in the morning, a golf ball sized wakefulness”. If you can expand your consciousness/mind then when you read a book, listen to a podcast, take part in some training or engage in some conversation you will have a better understanding and awareness.
Like David Lynch I am a advocate of Transcendental Meditation as a way of expanding consciousness and this one practice alone improved my business substantially. I am sure other forms of meditation and practices can have similar effects and a lot of successful entrepreneurs will reference some sort of meditative activity as a contributory factor in their success. By working on yourself, your thoughts and awareness you will naturally start to think bigger as your notion of what is possible changes, your self belief increasing in line with this, and you have more creativity to make these bigger thoughts a reality.
Apologies if the above sounds too much like some hippy, new-age bullshit, there is some science behind Transcendental Meditation and other practices like it. To get more specific:
Ryan Judd – A lot of people consider working their asses off solely in terms of their business. You’ve got to do the same in terms of your own self development. I know this is hard when you have dependents, meditating does not pay the bills!
Martyna – I agree. There is an energy you can tap into when you surround yourself with good people.
Tim – Get back to the TM! I drop out every now and again. I find going to some sort of group meditation or back to a teacher is a good way to get back into it.
James – keep doing what you do.
Business wise I am thinking much bigger for 2014 which I put down to a clearer, more focused mind which can take in some of the lessons and wisdom imparted by James and others. It seems the trend to equate business performance in terms of 5, 6 or 7 figures which seems pretty vague, and possibly unhelpful, to me. My goal is to keep my team happy, growing my businesses and doubling my personal net worth.
James Schramko says
Net worth is a nice measure with the caveats of keeping your team happy. Happiness is my main metric these days,

I agree. Business wise I try and use something a little less abstract! I was going to ask how you measure happiness but I’m not sure about disappearing down that rabbit hole. TAG does a nice job of addressing the different elements of happiness and the things that go with it.
James Schramko says
I am sure of one thing – Cash in the bank reduces stress and improves my happiness. I can travel and have ‘experiences’ that reduce stress and provide for myself and my family. Net worth is a wonderful metric. Business value would be a good one and cashflow is a nice one to keep an eye on. I track all of these things. Other metrics like how well you sleep at night, how often you laugh, smlie, dance are important. How many things you do that are not any form of compromise in some way.
Guest says
I think there was a conversation on Freedom Ocean perhaps about building your own worth and having that safety net in the bank which then gives you greater freedom in a variety of ways and more opportunity to help others. I agree with this and it also gives rise to two other aspects of happiness – spontaneity and serendipity.
