James Schramko here. Today, I’ve got a special message if you are a marketing specialist. I deal with lots of marketing specialists, and I see a common thing happening all the time. And that is, you are undervaluing your special skill.
If someone wants to partner with you and have you promote their thing, make sure you charge enough. Often, I see marketers put a low percentage or a low fee on their thing, and they let the expert or author have the lion’s share. But it just doesn’t work that way. If you look at how companies like Udemy pay their teachers, it’s usually a small percentage.
If you look at book deals, you’ll see the author actually gets a tiny percentage. The marketing or distribution side of the equation is going to get paid more. If you’re doing sales calls for someone else, you want to get a huge chunk of the sale for all of that effort. It’s not easy or cheap to hire salespeople. You’re going to need to get a big amount for the marketing, just so that you can cover costs and still make a profit.
So if you’re a marketing company, make sure that you value yourself in the equation. If you want more help on how much to charge or what’s appropriate, I’m happy to share some ideas with you. Get in touch.
