FastWebFormula 2 James Dyson – Design
FastWebFormula 3 James Dyson – Software
Transcription:
James Schramko here and today I’ve got the fascinating story of the background of OptimizePress and James Dyson. Now that there’s a new launch coming out of OptimizePress 2, I’m finding myself reflecting on how it all came to be because I think there’s some great lessons in it for every online marketer. So come with me for the journey as I take you back to how it all began.
How It All Started
So way back in about 2006, I still had a job and I joined the WarriorForum which is a place where online marketers shared information. One of the marketers in there was James Dyson and he was selling mini site templates. He was a very, very young designer from UK and he was coding these templates making them look really good.
His designs always stood out from the beginning. Now in my scenario, I was using a website software called XSitePro and I had customers who were buying my cheatsheet learning how to get the better SEO results from it.
So I got a long background of SEO. One of my customers came to me and said, “Could you please convert one of these mini site templates into XSitePro?”
So what I did is I contacted this young James Dyson and I asked him for permission to convert his designs into XSitePro. So I did that and I did it on the basis that we will join forces as a joint membership and we called this Xsiteprofit.com and wayback then, we had a landing page with a free give away.
It had video on it which was quite rare and then it had an upsell with a one-time offer of an enhanced package so the free giveaway was some graphics.
The OTO or the one-time upsell was to get a paid graphics package and that gave us a customer list that we could then market to for our affiliate promotions and our other services. So that was James Dyson and I doing our very, very first joint venture where we were giving away these graphics and of course we were targeting the XSitePro community with XSite profit.
Then I started to get into local business marketing and helping customers with websites and I quickly identified that I shouldn’t be the one trying to build these websites in XSitePro. I certainly did the first few but that was so hard and it took so long, like it like would take me days to do this and then I couldn’t actually go out and find another customer.
So what I did is I went back to my friend James Dyson. I said, “James, could you build the websites for me?” And he designed these fantastic websites. One of them actually we ended up building for a gangster who ended up being murdered, so that was an interesting twist but we did get paid.
Now these websites were great. Following on from this, I started helping James with his business because I could see the problem that he was a designer and he was doing one-off and he was getting paid to be a designer and there’s a limit to how much you can make as a designer.
At the same time, my business was taking off and I started going through that transition where I was able to quit my job. I was teaching James, this young UK designer, about how to grow his business and to develop more packages and services.
He had a first attempt at an online website builder but it was more of an app at the time, an online app and you could choose your packages and then he would build the website according to the packages chosen so it was half automated.
Then he got some gigs with some big marketers who did a lot of volume. And then I suggested that James, take the information that he learned about conversions and testing and put them all into a WordPress theme, and that is how OptimizePress was born.
James spoke at my FastWebFormula event about the best converting elements of a website. What I’ve done is I’ve got that presentation and I’m putting it right here on SuperFastBusiness.com for you to see the entire presentation. This was just before OptimizePress 1 went to market. Straight after FastWebFormula 2, OptimizePress was launched and I was right behind it. I had James Dyson on interview.
I pushed it heavily on my InternetMarketingSpeed blog. A few people in my customer list picked up on the software and started promoting it. And then it got into the hands of the big guys like Ryan Deiss and it went out there and it became a mainstream product and the whole time, I continued to coach James Dyson on leveraging up his business. He was a member of SilverCircle which is my mastermind program.
I also was offering a bonus for people who buy OptimizePress from my link so I was building a nice customer list of OptmizePress buyers. I then actually put that case study of how I made $30,000 of OptimizePress sales inside my TrafficGrab course.
So anyone who paid $79 back then learned how to be an affiliate marketer and leverage the WordPress platform to make a lot of sales. That course is still our client inside SuperFastBusiness which is my Internet marketing community.
One Million Dollar in Sales in 12 Months
One year later, I had James Dyson speak at FastWebFormula 3 and he’d made over a million dollar in sales in 12 months and at that presentation, I asked him to present on how to build and create successful software and all the challenges involved. And there are plenty of challenges. You see as you grow your business, you’ll find things like, you need staff, you need suppliers for programming.
You need to have a service in place for people who have questions. You’ll go through different infrastructures for payment processing and delivery of your system, you’ll have thieves. I can’t tell you how many people have ripped off OptimizePress and come out with some cheap-ass product they sell for $7 which is not well supported.
So for everyone who might knock OptimizePress’ success, it’s because they haven’t come out with something like that themselves. And here we are now, a few years down the track and we’re on the verge of the OptimizePress 2 launch and the OptimizePress 2 launch is where James has taken everything he’s learned today and created an amazing sales/marketing platform that integrates with payment processes, autoresponders.
It’s a really simple, done-for-you, out-of-the-box solution. We can literally make changes on the fly. You can choose all different graphical elements or different fonts.
This is perfect for the person who is in that start-up phase with a limited budget who wants to do it yourself or if you have a team and you give it to your team and you have them work on it. Or if you employ a company like mine where we do custom websites and integrations, we can actually help you with our hourly packages just to refine and update, skin and code beyond where you can take it by yourself.
LeadPages vs. OptimizePress
So I might get a few questions about this point: Why do I recommend LeadPages and OptimizePress? Well, they’re slightly different in my mind. LeadPages is great for landing page creation and especially for opt-ins and integrating to Facebook and the fact that it’s an app and it doesn’t need WordPress at all is a great feature.
OptimizePress is better for memberships and sales pages where you want more detail. It’s an integrated solution with gateways and autoresponders and GoToWebinar as well. It’s like the super version of OptimizePress 1 but what you’ll find is that OptimizePress is good for that all-in-one membership sales page solution. You can use both.
You’re getting all the benefits of WordPress plugins with OptimizePress and if you use just that, you don’t have to have a different WordPress theme. Now in my own business, we tend to build on a different theme generally called Genesis and we custom-code skins.
So if you’re up to something custom, it doesn’t really matter what platform you use but if you want something that glues everything together, it’s nice and simple, then OptimizePress 2 is going to be a good solution for you.
Feature Benefits
I’ll show you some of the feature benefits now. So here are some of the features of OptimizePress 2:
- You can build your pages in minutes with no code. (That’s really the promise, and…)
- You can choose the number of columns you want
- Add rows with different colour backgrounds
- Use your browser to add a huge range of elements
- Drag and drop elements to different columns
- Add custom code elements
- Drag and drop rows, and
- Change your fonts
- Plus! You’ve got feature boxes
- Delay content
- Navigation can be changed
- Bullet blocks
- Headline styles
- Audio and video players
- Buttons
- Opt-In Boxes
And many many more features, including:
- Guarantees
- Content toggles
- Live boxes
- Facebook comments
- WordPress comments
- Testimonials
- Pricing tables and more
And you’ve got the membership templating system. So you can organize your products and memberships if you like the WordPress platform. You’ve got security. It integrates with payment and you’ve got the ability to change the membership pages.
Plus you can put all your WordPress theme and plugins, autoresponder mailing integrations, GoToWebinar integrations, complete launch sites so you have the multi-launch page sequences. You’ve got presets, custom navigation bars and export your design and templates to share in the marketplace. This is a great, great solution and I’m really pleased that James has put this out.
OptimizePress 2
Now if you think OptimizePress 2 is something you’re interested in, head over to BuyWithBonus.com and when you buy OptimizePress 2, you’ll also get a bonus. You can choose from one of the other videos. Hopefully you’ll like James Dyson’s presentation from FastWebFormula 2 and FastWebFormula 3.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this little run down but I think it’s a great story because if you have a look over that seven-year period, you’ve seen James Dyson come from a technician to an entrepreneur through the processes of things like SilverCircle and James Dyson was my first million dollar student and I’ve got others now.
So if you’d like to be doing something like that, head over to SilverCircle. You must be doing $10,000 a month and I’ll be able to help you have a similar success to what the other SilverCircle members are getting which is phenomenal growth. That is a great story behind this.
OptimizePress 2 is the real deal. It’s well supported. James Dyson is a design guru. In fact most of the logos on my websites were designed by James Dyson. Everything from FastWebFormula, SilverCircle, SuperFastBusiness, they all came out of that James Dyson design mold. So I hope you’ve enjoyed this presentation. And I’ve got a special feature coming up: an interview with James Dyson and me.

Great post.
I have to say I’m drooling over how the design has evolved! I loved v1 and the new version looks stunning. Between this and Leadpages, I feel like I’ve got my toolbox fully stocked!
My question – What was James’ (Dyson) biggest breakthrough / ‘aha’ moment that you were able to help him work through. I’m interested in peeking behind the curtain of what obstacles he felt he had in his way to OP launching (and being a homerun), and how you helped him gain new perspective and overcome the challenge. I’m needing this kind of outside perspective in my own business (yes, I’ll be taking a peek at silver circle:) – and I always like seeing real world examples of shifting one’s thinking and perspective to solve a business challenge.
Jesus Perez says
Awesome video, James! I always drop your name with OptimizePress. I don’t think other marketers realize how critical you were to it’s success.
James Schramko says
Thank you so Much Jesus. I have always enjoyed our long term mutual dealings.
Zoe says

James Schramko says

James, during your 7-year journey, what was the most prominent, most memorable point of your struggle to stardom? What was this “road block” and how did you mentally overcome it?
Congratulations on achieving what so many can only dream of.
Justin Davis says
Thank you James for the work that you do and for always providing great content!
Here’s my question:
Any suggestions on how musicians and other music business professionals can use OptimizePress 2? Any specific marketing advice for the music industry in general?
Tom Stewart says
Schramko, I have been a longtime listener to all of your podcasts and you, Timbo and Ezra have kept me company on my daily hour and a half commute into downtown Miami. I feel I have attended a University course in online marketing and creating the proper mindset to succeed. My question for James is: What mental attribute has determined the majority of your success and how have you refined it? My family and I are avid Brazilian Jiu Jitsu players, we have found that the proper mindset or “heart” often over rules physical ability. I believe the same is true for business.
Chris says
Just in time for a new project I’m working on.
I’m interested in using the “Membership Portals” area to restrict people access to an online web app.
AND – updating the website sales landing pages that will promote that service.
Great that you allow 3 sites, that way I can use on both (same product really)
Looks very promising for my case. : )
James Schramko says
Chris sounds like a direct match!
John says
James, pre-congratulations on your 100th Super Fast Business Success episode. I stumbled upon your stuff just a the right time as a friend and I are collaborating on an info product/course. Looks like optimizepress will make it much easier. Thanks for being a stand-up guy (at least that’s what the internet says about you). Rock on.
James Schramko says
Thanks although it is my 31th episode I only show the last 100 in the feed :)

My question – what happened to the gangster who got murdered? I mean, I’m totally sold on OP2, so I don’t have a lot of questions there… But I am totally wondering about the gangster!

What are the criteria James D uses to decide whether to drop a project/feature and “pivot” and when to persevere with it? (we all face this issue)
