James Schramko here talking about Ikigai, and in particular, this book. This book is called Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles.
I want to read the contents for you because I think this is really seductive. If you’ve ever heard the Hedgehog Principle and Jim Collins’s Good To Great, this is like the kick-ass original version of the Hedgehog Principle. It’s a little bit more complex than the simple Venn diagram.
Wait till you hear the table of contents. It is Ikigai, the art of staying young while growing old. I really think that’s what I’m doing actually. Anti-aging secrets, little things that add up to a long and happy life. How to live longer and better by finding your purpose; and who doesn’t want to do that?
Finding flow in everything you do. How to turn work and free time into spaces for growth. Masters for longevity. Words of wisdom from the longest living people in the world. Traditions and proverbs for happiness and longevity; and this is from Japan’s centenarians.
The Ikigai diet; what the world’s longest living people eat and drink. Resilience. Sorry, gentle movements, longer life, exercises from the east that promote health and longevity. Resilience and wabi-sabi. How’s that for a tongue twister? How to face life’s challenges without letting stress and worry age you, and epilogue, Ikigai, the art of living.
I love this book. It is a great book. I recommend it to you. But more than that, find your Ikigai.
I live my Ikigai. Every year, I go to the Maldives. I surf. I talk business. I eat healthy food. I practice my breathing. I get fit. I love it. I hope you can be that inspired to jump out of bed in the morning as I am for my daily surf.
