James Schramko here. And I just had a visit from an electrician. And it prompted me to think about something that happened a long time ago that I want to share with you because it’s very important.
This electrician was changing a switch, and the switch was made by ABB. And that probably doesn’t mean anything to you. But it’s a company called ASEA Brown Boveri. And it reminded me that I used to be sponsored by that company many, many years ago when I used to race sailing boats.
And I remember there was a time there where there was this world champion, like multiple world champion racing. And I really wanted to sail with this guy, I wanted to race on his boat. And it turns out that the person on his boat who did the same role that I was doing on the boat that I was on, quit. And that was my perfect opportunity. No doubt this guy knew me and wanted me to sail with him, and was going to invite me to sail with him. But what happened was he actually got someone else. And I remember being quite taken aback and realizing the mistake that I made was I never actually told him. I never asked for the job. I never told him I wanted that position. And I just left it to chance and chance didn’t fall my way.
So, the lesson is, if there’s something you are aware of that you want and you know there’s someone with the opportunity, ask them. Don’t just sit there because, as it happened to me, it might not happen. So hopefully, this is a little bit inspiring. And I’d love it if you’ve got any thoughts around this.
