James Schramko here, and there’s a big problem happening in society at the moment, and I wonder if you are part of the issue. If you have an iPhone or a smart device, it’s worth paying attention to just how much time you spend on this and where you spend your time because we are in the age where your attention is constantly under siege.
People are trying to grab your attention. Have a look at the latest iPhone. If you have one of those, there’s an app in there called Moments. It’s actually built into the phone and it will track for you how many times you pick up your phone and where you spend your time. And it can really be frightening when you have a look at that for the first time.
I suggest you keep tabs on your phone use, and if you possibly can, build in an activity every single day that is phone free. I challenge you, do an analogue activity. Do something old-school. Get a skateboard, or a mountain bike, or an e-bike; they’re very popular. Or go surfing, or kayaking, or walking, or go to the gym or whatever. Reading a physical book, you know, that doesn’t have a battery. And see just how much that can improve the quality of your life. Go to a cafe or have a meal with a partner or your family without a screen and see what happens.
I’m really passionate about this and I think we are on the verge of a tipping point as society where we’re just going down this slippery slope of being more interested in the virtual world than the physical world. So, get back out into the physical. I’m here to tap you on the shoulder and say, “Hey, put the phone down for a while.”
