James Schramko here. Today, I want to share with you how to find something positive from a negative event. Today, I was on a call with a client and I found out that his studio had been robbed and this is the second time that it’s happened. And he was very disappointed, and a little bit violated, and upset about it. And it’s understandable.
I can relate to when this happened to me about three and a half years ago. I had all my stuff stolen from the car when I was surfing and I ended up with nothing but my surfboard in a foreign country and it was terrible. But it is these moments, it’s these negative things that happen that provide us the contrast that shows us what a good thing actually is.
So here’s a few little exercises you can actually do to help you out when bad things happen. The first thing is, accept that as an entrepreneur there will be things that happen all the time. It is normal and I talked about this with the guest of mine Nam Baldwin on a podcast. It’s normal and you would expect this and we need to accept it and then we tidy up. The other thing I like to do is, reframe it.
In the general scheme of things, on the scale of not being able to remove the lid on a jar in your kitchen through to being murdered, most things are not as bad as they seem at first and sometimes it takes time to deal with these situations. Every time I replace my computer or I use a password, I’m reminded of that event that happened. But at that time when things were bad, when I had nothing and basically, I was one surfboard more stocked up than the average homeless person. Like, that was it. I didn’t even have pants! It was so humiliating, but it made me get in touch with that feeling of having nothing, being without. So anytime that I have something, I’m actually more grateful for it.
And another tip is to just deal with that emotion, not bottle it away or tuck it away or hide it or bury it. Confront it, live it, get it out. Maybe go out to a park and do a primal scream or just feel it. If you feel like crying then cry. The most important thing is to try not to take it out on strangers, that next person you’re on a phone call with or your family members. Sometimes it can surface and it could be nasty if they’re copping it because of something else.
So there are a few ways that you might process but my grandma used to say when we’re painting, you can’t have light without shades. So those black parts on the canvas, they’re gonna make the white ones really pop so that next time you have a win be sure to celebrate it. Because this is life, life is not straightforward. It is this gooey soup of crazy chaos. Embrace the good moments, ride out the bad ones. They’re going to happen, it’s part of life. Hope this has been helpful. Maybe where this video is, share something that happened to you and how you dealt with it, I’m curious to see what advice you’d give.
