James Schramko here. Today, I want to share with you a counterintuitive idea when it comes to your team members. When I had a job and I was selling, I was a high-performance salesperson. I got very good results. And what I found was the systems that were put in place to ensure a minimum standard of performance from the average salesperson were actually detrimental and held back the high performers.
So, I want you to think about this – are you using any kind of Draconian or unreasonable level of requirement in your business that could actually be pulling back high performers? What could happen if you let the restrictors off? I mean when you buy a car or a motorbike, they come with restrictors, they come with penalties in there. They actually tune them down so that they can last longer and they don’t break. And when people want to get to high performance what they do is they replace things like the computer chip, and they upgrade the exhaust system, and they extract more performance from the exact same engine unit because they take away the restrictors. They take away some of the safety barriers and the margins for error.
So, think about this, there’s probably a high performer lurking in your team who’s getting frustrated from having to do extra reporting or checking in all that too often when they’re actually very responsible and they’re very capable and you should probably just try letting them go and see what they can actually do. I encourage you, find your high performer. Unlock them. Let them perform and be amazed with what they can do as I’m constantly surprised and amazed at how incredible human potential is when you let it free, when you un-restrict it. So, let that horse out of the paddock. Let it bolt. Let it run free and see what can happen when you have an organic team and drop the shackles.
I’m James Schramko. I hope you’ve enjoyed this. If you like this sort of concepts, I have a whole chapter about team in my book, Work Less Make More. It’s available on Amazon and Audible. Check it out.
