James Schramko here. Today, I’m going to share what to do if you’re feeling a bit scattered between different business options, you’ve got a few different clients, and you’re a fairly small operator. Because I had a call this morning and my client was in this exact position. This is what I said.
Firstly, start with the mindset on your effective hourly rate. Reset your paradigm. You need to believe you are a $1,000 per hour resource. So anything below that is not worth doing. For example, if you get paid $150 per hour for a particular type of work, don’t accept those jobs. Instead, have a look at how you can package things together in a recurring monthly retainer for three or five or $6,000 per month. So that’s step one, you have a new mental level of what your value is. Step two is eliminate jobs that fall below that.
Step three is to create a package that is fairly consistent, that is the same kind of core offering for every client because standardization is how you can scale up. Much like Henry Ford did with the Model T. And customization is a time and energy killer. It’s very hard to customize on scale.
So, you’ve reset your mindset on your effective hourly rate, you’re now creating packages that are consistent and a standard offering. The third thing is now client selection. Go after the clients who are a great fit for that package.
And then the fourth thing is build your team to deliver that standard package, which is much easier than customized stuff. And if you’re patient and if you build a strong foundation with your team, you’ll have a great business.
So now just to recap, you’ve gone from a solo operator with a multi-ray of different customers with all different packages at different price points to now having a strong opinion of what your monthly value can be when you divide by the number of packages by having a high effective hourly rate. You have now a standardized package that’s easier to market and easier to sell. You have a typical type of client who’s perfect for that package, and you have a team to deliver that. That’s effectively what I rolled out when I created my SEO business. And again, when I created my website development business.
