James Schramko here, and, I am loving the new look. That’s what everyone says to me, because you may have noticed if you’ve seen some of my videos or pictures, I now have this little beard here. I grew it out quite a lot, actually, because I have a client in the ecommerce space who has a beard product and he sent me this bag full of stuff with all sorts of tonics, and brushes and clippers and so forth. And as an experiment, for the first time in my life, I grew out a beard, and it got a bit bushy and a bit more wirey than this.
But what happened that really fascinated me, is it created a huge reaction with everyone around me, from my mother, who says she doesn’t like it – sorry, mum – and my partner, my wife, she’s like “not so sure about this,” but I think she’s getting used to it. And then lots and lots of clients in particular, and friends, they send me private messages, or they comment when I upgraded my profile picture, “love the beard,” “love the new look,” “that looks epic”, this sort of stuff.
So what it really brought home to me, and this is critical, is people pay attention to the visual cues. They do notice when something’s different, and there is a connection. And maybe it’s only when you do something quite different than normal that people will tell you about it that you’re actually aware of it. But in other words, people are paying attention. So everything that you’re producing, everything you’re publishing, all those things you’re constantly putting out there, over time, you’re building up an audience who will pay attention to it, and they probably also pay attention to the messages you share.
So I’ll just want to encourage you, try new things, be aware that people are often on your side, except for mum, but she really is on my side. And that they will notice. And it’s just a wonderful thing about humans, we’re really able to spot what’s different. I think it’s part of our survival technique. I don’t know what’s going to happen with my beard. I can’t say, we’ll see what happens in the future, but I just gave it a number 2 trim, I think it’s going alright. But I will be open to any comments.
What do you think, beard or no beard? And have you changed something recently that everyone’s commented on? Are you finding the same phenomenon that I have?
