James Schramko here, and I want to share a shocking truth that is quite profound.
I remember attending a workshop and a facilitator had come into our workplace, and at the time I was running a Mercedes-Benz dealership for a living. And one of the mechanics there was around 65 years old and when this lady said, “You can choose what you want and you can be in charge of that,” he actually burst into tears because he had never considered that he had control over his own life. He literally went from school to being an apprentice mechanic and then being a mechanic and that was it.
Do you sometimes find yourself traveling through life and wondering, you know, how did you get here? Well, the chances are, you’ve never actually thought about where you want to be. So, one thing a mentor did with me, he painted this metaphor of us being at Grand Central Station and we look up on the board and we can see all the different stations that we could buy a ticket to and then we decide where do we want to be. Will we be happy when we get there? Is this what we’d like to have? And then we go and buy the ticket and we get on the train and that is the journey. And we’re on those tracks and we’re so determined to get to that place. We’re not going anywhere else. We won’t get distracted.
And this was a very handy idea. It’s also covered in Maxwell Maltz’s book Psycho-Cybernetics. This visualization that you can actually mentally imagine things before they actually happen and that can actually improve your results. If you’re a dart thrower or a basketball player, visualizing achieving the outcome you want in advance of doing the exercise actually improves the chances of you getting the success. So, think about this, where do you actually want to be? Because you’re in far more control than you could ever possibly imagine.
I’m James Schramko, and I talk about concepts like this in my book, Work Less Make More. It’s available on Amazon and also Audible if you prefer to listen.
