James: Now, can you explain why people are not following through? What are the blockers? And I’ve got a couple of these things too, where I know I should do something. I don’t keep a to-do list, so I’m unconventional in that way, because that just burdens me and drains me of energy. I hate having a big list of to do’s. So I just don’t do it. That’s one thing I don’t do.
But I do have a couple of projects that I’m aware of that, you know, they revisit me from time to time. Someone will prompt me with an email or ask me where I’m up to with this thing. And I’m putting it to the side. Let’s talk about some of the reasons why that might be the case, why it hasn’t been completed.
Greg: Yeah, so there’s a couple things, right? So we touched on it earlier, which is a big, big, big one is environment. And I’m a really big fan of accountability. As a matter of fact, I have four accountability systems set up. So I have my 5am call that I have to do. And I have two other accountability systems that I run through by the time it’s 6:30 in the morning, and I have a weekly accountability call where I meet up with people every single week, and we go over our week.
So every single day, I’m checking in with people, Hey, did you get this done? Did this happen? And I make sure that the people that I have this accountability with, they’re also very serious. They’re working towards something, and it’s just like, Hey, we know that nothing’s more important, right now at least, at that stage in our life, than our goals and making something amazing happen. So we have those systems set up.
But another big thing here is, you know, the more you start following through with the things you say you’re going to do, like the more you’ll start following through with the things you say you’re going to do. So for instance, when I first started waking up at five o’clock in the morning – I’ll actually wake up at four – I probably failed at that maybe six or seven times. I’d probably do it for a couple days or one week, and then I would stop.
And then I thought, Okay, well, in order for me to make this happen, how do I make this specific thing a habit? Because the thing is, like, we have this voice in our head, like we say, Hey, I’m going to go do this. And there’s a part of us that says, Yeah, right. You’re not going to do that. Or you might do, I might do it. So what I want to do is I want to get that voice in my head to where, no matter what I said I was going to do, I know that I’m going to do it. And I have to rebuild that trust within myself.
I have to make sure that my word actually means something to me where I say, I’m going to do it. I’m going to strengthen that. So how do I strengthen that? Well, I strengthen it with little things, little building blocks, how to build a foundation. By the way, one of my favorite books is The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. And the reason why that’s one of my favorite books is because he says, success doesn’t come from taking these massive, obvious actions. It comes from taking seemingly insignificant actions consistently over a long period of time.
