James Schramko here. I once got a call from an events company on a Monday and they said, “James, we have signed up a bunch of people to do an online training course, and we just discovered that our coach had actually bought a how-to manual and was planning on delivering that to our students, and we’re not happy about that. Would you deliver the course for us? We will pay you what they paid us. We just ask that you could deliver it so that we could save face and deliver what we promised.”
And I said, “Sure, I can do that. When does it start?” And they said, “This afternoon.” I said, “OK, that’s fine.” And I opened up my slide deck, and I drafted, I think it was an eight-week course in slides, with an intro module and then a sort of summary module. So it was a ten-week course with eight sessions. And then I just delivered the first one that afternoon at very short notice, and introduced what the course will be, and what modules will come. And then each week, I was able to prepare the next module. I had an entire week to prepare, which was a luxury. That course, which was called SuperFast Start, was viewed by thousands of students over time, over the years in my first online community, which I started over ten years ago.
And the whole point of this is, I had not prepared much for that course, but the course was already sold. And that’s the way a lot of things can operate, same with a live event. You can get paid and then create. The main thing is if you do this, there’s one caveat – you must deliver. If you take the money, you have to deliver. Otherwise, you’re going to have a big problem. So when people say to me, “James, I’ve got this offer up, but what would I do if someone buys, and I tell them I don’t have the product?” I say, “You reply back, and you say, ‘Congratulations! Our course starts next week.’ And then you prepare the first module, and then deliver it over time, and then you can record it, and then you can turn it into a product.”
So if you can work well under a little bit of pressure, and if you’re a little bit creative, then you can actually move forward much faster than you thought. The worst thing you could do is sit down and create a course for the next two years, and then never launch it because you never get around to it. Start selling it early, and just have the first module ready to go.
I’m James Schramko, hope you’ve enjoyed this. I help people with questions like this all the time inside SuperFastBusiness membership. I hope to see you there sometime.
