James Schramko here, and today I’m going to address the question of what should you wear on your videos and in your marketing. If you’re a branding or design person, you would know that it’s very important to reflect a presentable image that your audience is going to appreciate.
So for men, for example, I would actually recommend to be reasonably clean-shaven and to wear at least smart clothing. I know I make a lot of videos in T-shirts, and that, in some ways, is my market. But you’ll see even in my book, Work Less Make More, that I have a nice shirt. Whenever I speak from stage, I dress up a little more. Gone are the days where I might present in flip-flops or bare feet. I think that’s really just a gimmick, and it might work for some of the market.
However, if you’re in a market where your customers are wearing collared shirts, if they have a conservative approach, then you really want to start dressing up a little bit. Probably I should dress up a little more for these videos, but then on the balance side of that, it’s very easy for me to make videos in what I’m normally wearing, which is T-shirts. And as someone who’s known as a person who surfs everyday, lives by the beach, and has very much a lifestyle business, I’m not selling to corporates or enterprises, so it’s not as big an issue for me as it might be for you.
If you’re in the female market, if you have a high-end clientele, you really want to dress it up a bit, because that’s going to make them feel more comfortable. But I would say, stop short of posing in front of rented Lamborghinis, because that’s over-stretching it and unrealistic and inauthentic.
So there you go. There are a few thoughts on how you might present yourself on your videos and in your marketing. And I will say this, try and be consistent across all mediums if possible. Remember that your brand is everything that you’re putting out there, and it’s how people think about you when you’re not there.
