You hear a lot about success paths from people who sell membership courses for high ticket. They’re gonna tell you there’s this sort of a linear step-by-step success path, you just map it out. It depends on what kind of membership you have is the short answer.
Step-by-Step training is possible for something that you don’t need to customize much
If I was teaching someone how to do showjumping for a horse, there may very well be a specific linear step-by-step success path that every single person must take to get to the result. If I was teaching swimming training, I might also find there’s a specific step-by-step process. Like my daughter, she’s going to swimming training and they do a specific progression.
When I learned to ride a motorcycle, they had a competency-based training. You had to start with standing next to the bike and then walking the motorbike and then you’re allowed to sit on it, and then you could put your helmet on and then you could put your key in ignition, and then so on and so forth. And finally, you get to ride it. Step-by-step, they take everyone through it, they all get the same result. Or cooking, you’re going to bake a cake, use exact same measurements, exact same process, exact same settings, you’ll get the exact same cake.
A business like mine, SuperFastBusiness, not quite the same. Because I get people coming in for slightly different problems. And they’ve got different strengths and weaknesses, and they’re at different stages. So it’s a double-edged sword. It makes it much easier for me to help people and to sell, but also harder for me to ever sell my business or to completely distance myself from the business.
So the success path will depend on what you’re selling, who you’re selling to, what level they’re at when you start with them. For example, my SilverCircle level, the higher level is, I’m getting such a grab bag of candidates, it’s like an exotic zoo and every animal is completely different. So you can’t treat them the same. They don’t have the same problems, and the success path is going to be different for each person. So it’s highly customized. And highly customized work is kind of like high-paid hard work in a way.
So yeah, my suggestion would be try and break down the common patterns. And if you’re lucky enough to deal in a market where you can put people in and they all go through the exact same steps and get the exact same result, your success path would be easy. Tools to create your success path, I would look no further than a stack of post-it notes and a pen. You write down where people are at when they start, what needs to happen next, and map it across a window or a whiteboard or a table and then build that as your system.
Hopefully that helps.
