Okay, so if you’ve got lots of ideas and you want to do writing, then you can come up with different ways to make it easier for you. I would suggest a framework, whether you print something out and stick it on the desk in front of you, a framework of a story arc.
Writing with great story arc will make it interesting for your readers. And you can plug and play that framework into any story so you come up with ideas. I think the separate processes are, there’s the idea generation, you can use different inspirations or processes to get ideas. If you don’t have a framework for ideas, there are frameworks for ideas. Then there’s the framework of turning that idea into the story.
And I would like to use a framework for that where you step people through a story, journey, if that’s a story framework. If you’re doing a sales framework, you might use a SPIN-type framework, where you talk about the situation, and then the problem, and then the implications. And then the solution. If it’s a teaching piece of content, you might use a format. You know, why is this important? What are we talking about? How does it work? What’s the next action step? So you can incorporate those.
The other thing is, if you don’t like the actual writing part, one way people address it is they use the Pomodoro Technique. They set a timer and they just write until that thing goes off. So it’s forced process and you do it every single day. Some of the best writers write regardless of whether it’s good or bad. And some of it will be good, and they zoom in on that. But they just get in the process of the writing.
And the closest metaphor I have for that is my surfing. I surf every day. And sometimes the waves are crap or the waters too cold or whatever, but I just do it anyway. Even the first few duck dives, it’s like ice cream on your scalp. You got this freezing cold water. It’s not enjoyable. I just start to Wim Hof and I embrace the cold and the pain and I look forward to warming up as I move around more and catching good waves. So no matter how bad I feel at the start of that process, I come out feeling uplifted and amazing, like I’ve had this incredible hot-cold spa bath experience. And then I have a nice hot shower and I feel fantastic. But it’s not something that I would do just on a one-off basis. You got to get in the process of building that resistance and embracing the discipline of it.
