James Schramko here. Have you ever been invited by someone to catch up for coffee? They want to pick your brains but maybe you’re not feeling into it. And you don’t see that it will be a great use of your time.
I mean, you’ve got to go there. And you have to have the discussion where it’s usually very one-sided. And then you come back home. And let’s face it, quite often, you’re paying for the coffee, too. So if you want to avoid three hours of your life and the cost of a few coffees and a snack, here are a couple of responses that might help.
One is, if we were to meet for coffee, what would we be chatting about? Get them to tell you and then answer it on the spot. Let them know that you prefer to discuss it over the phone because you’ve got a few things scheduled. Another thing would be, hey, let’s catch up at the next local meetup. If you’ve got a membership or a community, port them all into the same event so you’re leveraging your time. You can meet 20 people at once.
Another one would be, look, I’m overseas right now. Because luckily for me, that is actually often the case. It’s very hard to have a coffee catch up in Manly when someone pops into town, if I’m in the Philippines and they understand that. And finally, you could just say, look, I just don’t want to catch up for coffee. But if you want to send me over an email with all the details, I’ll look into that. Me or my team will be back in touch.
Okay, so hopefully, you’ve got a “get out of jail” card next time someone offers to pick your brain, which I think is one of the least exciting phrases on the planet. If you liked this video, then make a comment right where you see it. Let me know we’re on track. I’ll send you a few more.
I’m James Schramko. Thanks for watching.
