James: James Schramko here, SuperFastBusiness.com, chatting with Kan from SocialWave.com.au. Hello, Kan.
Kan: Hi James.
James: Kan, we’ve been chatting about video stuff of late, and I want to ask you a question about comments, because we’ve been publishing our YouTube videos for a long time, and not getting great results in the past. And we’ve been making a bigger effort, which is one of the reasons I want to talk to you. I want to learn directly from someone who knows about this. I know you manage 40 or 50 different YouTube channels for your clients. So you’re seeing stuff that could be useful.
Comments. Lately, we’ve actually been getting comments on videos, which is something we haven’t had too much of before. And I wanted to know, is it something we should be aiming for? Is it a goal to help us with our YouTube algorithm? And what if people say things that are nice or not nice? Because you tend to get some really weird comments on YouTube. Sometimes, I don’t even understand them. It could range from people trying to flog some spammy forex trading bot through to someone to say something very, very nice. And is it best practice to respond to them all? Give us a little bit of a rundown on comments.
Kan: So, comments fall under the overall umbrella of engagement. So this is actually a ranking factor for the YouTube algorithm as well. So it’s a search engine. So YouTube definitely looks and analyzes sort of the number of comments, the keywords within these comments as well. And you definitely should respond to valid comments. For the spam bots you get, I wouldn’t bother with these, I’d probably just flag them as inappropriate. But for the ones that are genuine, and they’re real, I would definitely recommend responding to them. The other thing about comments as well is also within your videos, particularly at the end of your videos, you should be actually doing any call to actions, you should be asking people to drop their comments in the comments box below. Because that prompts people to do it. You’d be surprised the amount of times that people don’t say it, but they should and actually prompt someone to leave a comment. It means you actually read it as well. But I think comments are actually definitely one of the most important parts of a video on YouTube, because it’s part of the ranking factor with the algorithm, for sure.
James: Love it. Well, there you go. So basically encourage it. And should we respond to ones that are sort of lukewarm or just sort of let other people respond to them?
Kan: I think if you get to a stage where you can’t respond to all the comments, that’s a great problem to have. But I would say for most people, you probably only get a sprinkle of comments. So I definitely respond to all of them, good, bad, lukewarm. You know, the bad ones, we don’t recommend you try and I guess, stoke the fire with the trolls, and the ones that are trying to get a reaction. But you know, a diplomatic response always helps as well, because it means you’re active. And I think the key thing to know about platforms, whether it’s social media and with YouTube, as well, is that these platforms want you to actually use every feature of the platform. And comments is a big part of that for YouTube. So you definitely should be engaging in that as much as possible.
James: Love it. If you’ve got a question for Kan at SocialWave.com.au, then comment right where you see this video, and let us know what your question is. And I’ll get Kan back on for another session.
