James Schramko here. What do you do when you start maxing out as a personal services agency, when you’re the only person in the business doing all the work for the clients, but you’ve reached capacity?
Well, the first thing to be aware of is, you don’t actually have a business. You have a job. Your business is very job-like because it doesn’t work without you.
So, step one, is to think of your enterprise as a business. And a business is designed to attract and retain customers, according to Peter Drucker. So if that’s the case, and you want to attract more customers, you need capacity to deliver, which means you’re going to have to get more people on board, other than you.
So, a few things you can do to make this a bit easier is, start talking about your business as a business. Start identifying the tasks in the business that need to get done that perhaps you shouldn’t be doing. And build a team around you. It might start with support, it could be account management. You might hire some specialists who are good at the thing that you’re good at, so that you can start handing out the work. And over time, you can gradually scale and you can also have new customers coming in wanting to deal with the business rather than just wanting to deal with you because that’s a common complaint.
The customer always wants to deal with you, the founder, the principal. Well, if you talk about your team, and you start thinking like a business, you’ll actually create a business over time.
Hope this is helpful. I’ve got lots of training around building team inside SuperFastBusiness Membership. I hope to see you inside there sometime.
