James Schramko here with an internet marketing news update.
One of the things I learnt running a really large business is how important it is to be able to keep an eye on the numbers. Now this is a dry topic and it’s not that exciting but I’m going to encourage you for just one second. Just think about doing what is right for your business even if it’s not easy or even if it’s not fun but you need to know your numbers.
You need to know how many visits come to your website, how many of those visits convert into customers, and of course you need to know of all the market share available to you, how much are you actually selling of that. Have you maxed it out or you’re not even scraping the surface? And when you take your numbers and statistics, how do you report on them or display them in a way that makes sense to you. And importantly, if you have to sell anything, quite often you’ll be putting data and statistics into your presentation format.
One of our members this week in SuperFastBusiness posted a great presentation on how to make persuasive and meaningful data representations. You should check it out.
Selling your domains or websites.
Let’s switch gears a bit. You’ve probably seen that I’m selling sites from Marketplace and this is a good discussion in both of my podcasts InternetMarketingSpeed and FreedomOcean in the last week or so. I put out an episode around domain buying, domain selling, website buying, website selling and it’s a good time for you to go and assess what’s in your covert, which domains should you let go of? Some of our SuperFastBusiness members have been giving away domains for free to other members.
Now the important thing when you’re doing this, when you’re filtering what you should keep and what you should let go of, be sure to set your opening filter. In other words, how did you get these domains in the first place that you’ve decided to never develop? In my case when I identify what caused me to do that, I make sure that I don’t do it again.
So reset your filters, focus on less domains and less websites and make better websites out of them. Go a bit deeper and a little bit less broad. That seems to work now with the way that sites like Google are insisting that you have quality and relevancy. But also you, you only have a certain amount of bandwidth and unless you have a very large team, you should be focusing more of your efforts on less of your websites.
So if you’ve got any leftover domains, if you’ve got a stuck surplus, get rid of them. You’re probably never going to develop them and the renewal fee is just going to add up over the years with compound effect.
How important is SEO?
One of our members in SuperFastBusiness asked, should he be doing his own SEO or should someone else be doing it? I actually launched in there with quite a discussion and the way that I see SEO is yes, it’s very powerful, yes, you can dominate on the most dominant search engine like Google and perhaps a little bit on Bing and Yahoo. But is that the #1 focus for most people’s business? I suggest probably not. Focus more on getting the strategy right.
What do you have in place right now that you can leverage better? Not just on Google but in general. Can you place another product within your product range that you can cross sell to your own customer base?
Can you create premium content in the form of a podcast or video or blog post or interview that you can put out there for people to find. Not just in Google but in YouTube and in iTunes, and can you put a press release about that? So don’t just obsess all your focus on SEO.
Remember there’s much more traffic to get out there. Start your own affiliate program. Go and buy some banners. Do some forum posts.
Put your link in the signature file. Create a kick ass blog with amazing content. These should be the priority.
SEO is the by-product of having a great blog and having a great set up website. SEO is an extension or an add-on to when you’ve got something that already does really well, when you want to increase it. Add more depth, add more dimension to your website. Put more blog post, put more pages, put more podcast and what you’ll find is that on-page SEO will drive more sales and drive more traffic automatically and then you can boost it with a little bit extra.
When you know which keywords convert. When you know what content your customers love, enhance it, accelerate it with more SEO.
Everyone has an agenda.
I had to laugh; there was a great thread about Guru Launches and the Guru model. Look, they have one particular method of promotion of mass mail, mass emails, high priced products, questionable value in many cases. Let’s face it you can do a lot more benefit to your library by spending $2,000 on Amazon with Kindles. That should get you about a hundred amazing business books and I think that would probably be a better use of your time.
If you pull up an office and sit there and read a hundred kindles, you’re going to get an education no matter what. In any case, I’ve been watching the discussion, the noise, the fuss, and everything and I want to remind you something. Every single person has an agenda.
Every book every author has an opinion, that book or the work they put forward is their opinion and what you’ll find often is you’ll find a lot of the death of or the sky’s falling in type marketing to get you to buy these products. And then at the very same time in the next breath the Guru has an agenda and they have the solution to this big problem that they’ve put forward. I mean this is just basic marketing.
I’m not a hundred percent sure why people get so sucked into it, but I can imagine that it’s just fear and people want to solve their problems. So everyone has an agenda. Even I have an agenda.
Why do I put out a free video every single week with amazing content?
My agenda is simple. I would like you to join SuperFastBusiness.com. Okay, so there you are, that’s my agenda. Now I’m selling that at $67 / month sort of rate so I think it’s the best value known to man for internet marketing.
But in any case, whether you join or not, I’d love you to stay subscribed, keep getting these great videos, you can pick them up on YouTube, you can pick them up on iTunes, and you can also join the email newsletter or get them either daily or every few days when I put out all of my videos. Or you can just get a weekly digest. However you do it, even if you get an RSS feed or just wait for my Facebook posts, I hope you enjoyed the content.
It’s been great catching up this week. I look forward to bringing you some new topics next week.

I found a lot of value with this video. You made me think how important it is to have a strategy.
You are correct, their are more other ways to create the traffic. Their is to much noise online about seo. We intend to forget about keeping it simple.
Repurpose content you already have with press releases, case studies, reports, and video… I must admit, I am only understanding now why you should go that route..
Thank you the for the video tips…

Hi James,
Once again a leading light in that you are honest and integral. I have been getting bamboozled and confuddled by others telling me it is all about seo. I know it is important but yes it will take care of itself really as I concentrate on getting my message across with videos and blogs in my own style. Thanks again.
Tim
thank you Tim.
