The team at Wistia make the best marketing videos of all the companies I know. In this video they show you what microphones you can choose from when making your videos. Be sure to use a proper mic and not the one built into your camera.
Choosing a Microphone for Your Video – Wistia Blog
If you are interested in the audio gear I use the most it is this:
Home Studio:
Rode NTG-3 Shotgun Mic
Rode Boompole with grip
XLR extension Cable
BeachTek DXA XLR mixer (This plugs into the Canon DSLR camera and powers the Mic)
(For Screen recordings I use a Rode Podcaster USB Mic)
When Out and About:
I use a Rode SmartLav (plugged straight into iPhone)
What equipment are you using? (We talk about topics like this inside our private community)

Thanks for sharing James! Super excited to start making videos for a new teaching product where audio is super important.

Sound is ultra important! Good luck
thanks for sharing this! I was JUST shopping around for mics – the shotgun mic was on my list – but after seeing how they use the iphone makes me want to test out my options :)

For ease of recording in one place the Shotgun is the nicest. No wiring up and you can get clean sound. Be sure to make sure there is nothing noisy (other than you) in the path of the mic because it will pick up anything in that laser beam line.
For the iphone I’d recommend the Gold Pro Cardoid mic (various options here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/GOLD-PRO-TIE-CLIP-LAPEL-LAVALIER-MICROPHONE-for-IPHONE-IPAD-IPOD-SMARTPHONES-/271046476259) (I have no affiliate with them – just bought a couple of their mics).
It’s about half the price of a SmartLav but for my money has better sound. Much less hiss. You can select cable length too so you can have a 1m one for recording to your iphone in your pocket, or a much longer one for recording into your Mac if you’re doing a webcam video on a whiteboard for example.
Would also recommend looking at auphonic.com. Does a great job of using AI to clean up your audio files. All free.

The wistia video was good… but he’s right, he is no microphone expert. The lavalier part was just a case of someone who does not have much experience. There is no reason that his lavalier audio should have sounded that bad. Something was not quite right there. I have an ME 66 shotgun as well as a nice lavalier setup I prefer the lav for quality, versatility, and focus (helps cut out background noise).

Mt Rode Pin mic sounds way better than the one in the video – and I am more than happy with the Rode SmartLav with iPhone for out and about. I leave the Zoom H4N at home now.
Hey, James, I looked up reviews for the Rode Smartlav, but reviews are not so good – they produce a hissing noise. How do you get rid of the hissing? Thanks!
Hey AlmasQ, I had a similar problem, and after a re-shoot I managed to deal (mostly) with the the hissing. Check out this Video by Curtis Judd – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaAUN_D5st0&list=PLOx4x2k8p3RC0orGJ_ajoAtiJoGR6sOv3&index=8.
I dont experience a hissing noise so I am wondering if whomever reviewed it had a faulty device they were plugging into. Use Auphonic to get the best sound cleaning https://www.jamesschramko.com/business/how-to-get-broadcast-audio-quality-for-free-auphonic-revealed/
which camera do you use that has a mic input? (or at least an input for a mixer)

I use a Canon DSLR 60D
Thanks for the review – very helpful – I’m looking for a mic for my home studio!
BTW. the guy presenting in the video, please stop shaking your hands up and down whenever you say a syllable – it’s highly distracting.
