James Schramko here from jamesschramko.com. What if you’re an expert at something? Let’s say you’re a really good agency or an e-commerce seller, when should you start teaching what you do?
My advice would generally be hold off a little while. Make sure you’ve developed your business into a strong business. Give yourself the benefit of that focus to be truly the best in the world because the longer you wait to teach, the better story you will have and the easier it is for you to get stuck into it. Plus you will have had systems and team taking care of that core business or you will have sold it. And then you’ll be in a great position to teach and it will really rescue you if you’ve become bored with the thing that you actually do.
Sometimes, I see people trying to teach too early and often they’ll make the mistake of teaching their competitors and make their core business a bit more difficult. So that’s my advice is, wait a little bit longer. Build up your history, your case studies, document it, wait until you really get that itch extra strong to teach and then start teaching. Hopefully, this will save you from splitting your focus too much.
