James: James Schramco here from SuperFastBusiness.com chatting with John Lint from 10XPRO.io. Hey, John.
John: Hey, everybody. Hi, James.
James: John, I have a question from a listener. Can you run a business from an iPhone or an iPad? Some people have seen others do it or talk about it. I know there is a couple people in my sphere who are very keen on the iPad. When we went to the Maldives, a lot of people were using an iPad. And since I got back, I pulled my iPad Pro out of the drawer. I like it for watching Formula 1 and getting the surf report and reading Kindles. And I do like it for answering forum posts, and it’s got good sound and it seems to have a better microphone, it seems more accurate when I use dictate. So I’m at the point where most things I can do in my business are from the iPad or the iPhone.
But I’m curious to know, have you’ve seen people start to take this approach? Do you think it’s actually practical?
John: You know, this is something that I realized by going to Maldives recently with you. I barely opened my laptop and I ran everything from my iPhone, you know? Like, we surf in the morning came back, check the iPhone a bit, maybe answer a couple of emails, maybe record a video for a client and you did that as well. I remember in the boat, your daily videos or even a welcome video, I did that as well. You can really run everything that you need.
Once your online business is set up the right way, you can run pretty much everything with an iPhone or an iPad. And that’s what I love about having an online business. I have my morning routine where I go for bike rides, I go surfing, I’m either swimming at the pool or at the beach. But I’m also, in those moments in between. I’m also with my iPhone, just making sure that, hey, you know it’s not a holiday. Like I’m still checking things up. And I can do this with my iPhone. And I think everybody can do it.
And we have a lot of clients who are doing that. They have built a business that is pretty much running on autopilot. And they also have a few important components that allow them to live that lifestyle. And when we think about, Okay, how could you do it? I think there are three essential elements that you need to be able to live that lifestyle in running your business from wherever you want.
And I think number one is obviously the phone and the apps that you need, you know, like, obviously communications apps like Skype or Slack to communicate with your team. Maybe with your clients, you have Facebook Messenger or Instagram or whatever, you can do all of that on your phone. So you basically need some basic apps in there. For me to manage my project in 10XPRO, we use Trello and that’s what we use with the team, and I use Skype. So super easy for me to do everything here.
I think the second step is obviously the team, very important to have a good team. Because there are things that we need to do in our business that we can’t do with just the iPhone. Like for example, you record a video, but then you send it to your team. They edit it with their computer, they need to be in front of a desktop or laptop, it’s more convenient to edit that video and then send it on the cloud or whatever. So I do that as well. And I know that my support team, they’re all trained, they know the procedures. Everything is documented, they can just do their job. they don’t really need me unless they have a specific question. And that’s where I can be just on my phone.
And then number three, I think is just the tech stack, you know? Like what are the tools that you’re using in your business to allow you to live the lifestyle that you want and I think that’s where 10XPRO.io comes in. That’s why we built it because we don’t want you to get stressed out, frustrated, overwhelmed with a ton of different tools that you then need to try to manage yourself or hire someone to manage, like maybe someone expensive, to try to set it up or worrying that things are going to break or just something simple.
The idea with 10XPRO is about one, one solution to allow you to do everything you need to succeed online. That way, you don’t have to manage different things. You can manage everything very easily. Your team can take care of it. And then once you have that setup, that trinity, I think that you now have the luxury of basically running your business from wherever you want. And if you want to do it on your iPhone, totally cool.
James: Yeah. And you can have a native app too so that you can run your membership from the iPhone.
John: Yeah, I mean, that’s something that we’re building right now. We’re basically developing a native app that is going to be available for members. That way, everything’s optimized, it’s fast, and all that stuff. And that’s definitely a working project that’s coming up in the next few months, I would say.
James: That being said, you know, I still use my own forum from the Safari browser on my phone, because I get a pretty full feature set. But as the administrator, there’s some things I want to do like moderate posts and things, probably those features don’t need to be in a simple end-user app but when I’m thinking about it, I agree. I think team is the key. I want to be one layer back from all the tools.
I’m not logging into my website, my support desk, whatever, I’m just looking at Slack. I can answer my customers questions in my forum from my phone. So that’s fine. I can run my team meetings from my phone, I can take customer notes and use Skype from my phone. When we’re in the Maldives, the only time I opened my laptop was to put my SD card in to get GoPro pictures.
John: Exactly!
James: In fact the first time I didn’t even know, I asked Giacomo to load them up to the cloud and send me a link. So I was sort of cheating there. I’m thinking the only things I need a laptop for now is running a GoToWebinar, I don’t think I can do that from my iPad. And if I wanted to change to Zoom or something, I could probably skip that step. But that’s one of the only things that I need a laptop for and I can’t wait to ditch the keyboard. It makes no sense. I don’t know why we have keyboards, I think we’ve got to get to that point soon where we can just think something and it will do it. And I think AI is going to be some part of that.
But if you can tell your team or dictate, you can actually get a lot of stuff done. So I’m really running my business through that Slack channel, through very simple instructions. And then having a team who has been there for a long time and understands your business, and they work like a muscle. They’re intelligent, and they think, and they’re creative, and you have routines.
And you’ve got dashboards and things so you know exactly what’s going on, the health of your business. But you shouldn’t be a web developer, I think that’s one of our big themes. You don’t have to be a web developer, you can hire someone in your business to take care of everything from bookkeeping through to updating your website, uploading, editing, podcasts, all that sort of stuff. So if you want to run your business from an iPad or your iPhone, we’re pretty much at that point in time where it’s possible. And with the longer battery lives and larger screens we have, it really is a choice.
And, you know, I’ve done it for, I think up to six weeks. Now it’s kind of my record. And two weeks is pretty straightforward. Certainly for days on end, I won’t come into this office where I’m recording this. Sometimes it’s nice to have a nice big screen. And if everyone’s asleep or it’s early in the morning and no one in my neighborhood is on the TV, my internet actually speeds up enough to have a good user experience from time to time.
John: Yeah.
James: But for the most part, you don’t have to. It’s optional. And I think it’s also probably healthier if we can be away from our business more and get the business being more of a business. And it’s a business to the extent that it can run without you. I think that’s one of the keys.
John: Yeah, I think that’s super important. And unfortunately, sometimes, a lot of people online forget about that. And the reality is that they don’t have an online business, they have an online job that they just created for themselves. And that’s something that we need to move away from. And you do that by getting leverage from tools.
But most importantly, by getting a team that is going to allow you to get the lifestyle that you want and be able to do the things that you shouldn’t be doing. That’s what I call and that’s what I teach, doing bad work. We need to stop doing bad work and only focus on doing good work and that is the thing that really matters – creating offers, talking to your customers, those things that move the needle in your business. Otherwise, you know, once you are there, once you have all these processes in place, then that’s where it should be.
We shouldn’t be sitting in front of a desk, right, and doing stuff. We should be out there, thinking creatively. And whenever we need, we can record our thoughts, we can talk to the team, we can get things done, we can talk to clients, and we can do that from wherever you want. Whether you have an android or an iPhone, it’s fine. As long as you can do it on the go, then you are in a good spot, I would say.
James: Thank you, John. It’s always a pleasure to catch up. John Lint there from 10XPRO.io. That’s a great way to build a machine that can do the work while you’re not.
