The Coolest Guy On The Planet Experiment Lives Again

Eric Louviere raised the topic of coolest guy on the planet in the 'New" Warrior Forum recently. It seems the new V Bulletin based forum is very SEO friendly, Hint Hint.

So - years down the track the experiment gets a boost.

It makes me reflect - what is this competition really about, why bother?

It is an experiment. A way to test theories. We have the mass link brigade with 'shady' content. We have the on page optimizers. We have the mature domain gang and we have the targetted URL people. Different blogs, websites, articles, bookmarks and other methods...

You learn a LOT when you watch the site move around after google slaps and changes in algo's The reality is with SEO a variety of approaches can be applied to get a similar result. The interesting thing is that most of the page one crew have stayed there for at least the last year. There have been many many attempts by others to infiltrate but they either give up or fall short. It is not as easy as some people claim to stay there.

I am still waiting for Peter Drew to be first like he promised ages ago - come on Pete - make some tricky RSS blaster 'bad-ass ' software that catapults you past the other guys and allows you to STAY there ;)

Coolest Guy On The Planet Lessons:

If I were starting today there is no way I would try and do it with a blogger blog on my domain. I would be making a straight HTML page using XSitePro 2 and a Semiologic Woprdpress blog just behind it giving it a nudge.

This happy combo has served many of my page one results. Traffic Secrets is may latest page one victory in a fairly competitive field. Product Launch Formula is still ranked very well too. I have hundreds of others like that (sorry not telling).

The best thing about SEO is that even a newbie can apply solid fundamentals and get SEO results. Search engines do not rate people on race, color, religion, wealth or experience. Just talent.

The legacy is a blog with PR 3 that can index a new website within minutes when required. Comments are welcome. at the Coolest Guy On The Planet Blog

"Sales Letters Cold Calls" - Marlon Sanders Gets It Wrong!

Ok, that was a little shocking for a headline but it got you here after all. I best explain.

"Google Top Ten Rankings" is a recent article by legendary copywriter Marlon Sanders of Design Dashboard fame among other things. I thought it would be fun to hijack a little SEO space for this headline "Sales Letters Cold Calls" since people will be searching for it after the article was published. He makes out the information is shocking and has never been heard before. Hmmm.

Marlon must have been reading the coolest guy on the planet as he has theorized some of the same techniques I have been using right here. He is honest about not being an SEO guy and makes the point that it is not really that hard. So far so good.

Marlon then outlines his SEO blueprint and it is quite a good one.
    1. Keyword research
    2. Search your topic
    3. Search your keyword in quotes
    4. Find a phrase with few search results
    5. Build several web 2.0 sites with same title (I have mentioned all of these and more in prior posts on the coolest guy on the planet blog right here).
    6. Digg your post
    7. Submit to Propeller and Blog (ping at Pingoat)
    8. Twitter your URL - (he theorizes this one)
    9. Confirm your top listing after one hour!
    10. Add fresh content
    11. Use onlywire to bookmark the future posts
    12. Add video (using URL in video at youtube).
Marlon then discusses avoiding your own websites and then asks SEO people why some of his sites are not in the serps.

My take on the advice is this: Vary the Title Tag a little - if you have too many of the same tags it looks contrived and unnatural. Perhaps that is why some of Marlons properties have been rejected by G**gle. I also do not entirely agree with point ten - it is possible to have a static page stay high in the results - I have proven this in many niches.

The rest of it is all great stuff. There are of course a few other things to do such as link from a forum and articles etc..

If you wish to learn SEO (search engine marketing) I will be starting a course on that soon at SuperFastSEO

If you need traffic to your site and you do not want to do it yourself then you may consider using TrafficSure a full Search Engine Marketing Service....

    Xomba is really cool

I joined up at www.xomba.com because I noticed hight rankings for product launch formula coming from there. I have done some quick study of the site and it allows you to post original articles - called Xombytes and you can tag other web content called - Xomblurbs.

The posts are put on the first page after posting and they are on a PR 4 site.
My example Xombyte was about product launch formula and my example Xomblurb called search engine optimization case study points back to this website (coolest guy on the planet).

Xomba is easy to use and has a nice adsense earnings function.

My Coolest Guy On The Planet Traffic and SEO Plan - (Post 177)

For this blog (which is currently running sixth for the coolest guy on the planet) I will start some web 2.0 tagging and promotion.

I recently launched a site and had 7000 page views within 14 days and it is sitting at 4th in Google for the search term it competes for.

For that site I engaged some of the basics I learnt here on the coolest guy on the planet blog.

The main things I did extra were really effective and they included getting more independant blogs pointing back to the site and pages within the site.

I also did a directory and search engine submission. Then i did a top ten optimizer report. The results were fast.

Then i did a keyword check for my competition and copied the main phrases for my pages. Then I blogposted links to those pages.

Next I made sure I announced the blog posts in Stumbleupon, Digg, propellor and then used Onlywire to tag all my bookmarks.

After that I submitted Video to You tube and Google Video.

I changed all my forum signatures and then made a special offer in a popular forum to get leads. I ran an autoresponder course.

To top it all off I submitted articles and classifieds ads to link back.

I will do all of this for this blog over the next few months to see what happens.

This will be interesting for the coolest guy on the planet blog!

Staying Power - Coolest Guy On The Planet - (Post 161)

Coolest Guy On The Planet is getting back to normal after a few weeks of strange events and new threats.

I have managed to stay 6th and 7th on Google for a few days now after the dust has settled. Quite often when new people arrive to the top they sit for a week or two then start dropping away unless they back the effort up with more firepower. Russell managed to stay there and Jon is doing a fight back.

Peter the video viral king has slipped back a bit, and is dragging onto page 2 with his cool viral Blog attempt.

Jon Leger is back on page one in tenth next to the Weird new entrant. I still don't know what that new attempt is but it should die off.

I am only behind Brad Fallon, Russell Brunson, Mike Filsaime and Garrett Boon. Pretty good company to keep. I should see Mike again in a few weeks in Sydney for Internet Mastery, Hi Mike!

Really I am quite pleased to stay Page One Google.

In Yahoo my Coolest Guy On the Planet fortunes have turned, I have obtained position 4th with my new Coolest Guy On The Planet blog and 10th with this cool blog you are reading now.

On MSN I am still appearing number 1 and number 2 - very strong indeed!

So currently I am on page one of Google, Yahoo and MSN with TWO entries for Coolest Guy On The Planet on EACH.

I like that little extension under my second listing for "more pages from James Schramko.com.." that is a nice indication that more content is waiting in the wings.

So how am I remaining strong for the term Coolest Guy On The Planet?

    Well, a quick recap....

I adjust my page titles and page content for different search Engines. MSN likes more keywords, Google likes more related keywords.

Yahoo LOVES blogs compared to the others, so my new James Schramko.com site is a Semiologic Blog and it seems to be working really well.

I have released only three articles for SEO recently (on page SEO , SEO content, and off page SEO).

Also I released an article about the free coolest guy on the planet competition you can enter.

These articles have generated a few back links to this cool blog and pushed my site up a little.

Naturally the theme of those articles helps suppoer the topic of SEO which is also true of my BlogCatalog SEO Coolest Guy On The Planet site that is gathering new "friends" each week.

These links from other pages to me helps me get more known to the search engines for this term. Even linking out to my other sites will help because I am proving I am not a link hoarder and I am connected in a web of theme related sites.

I have thrown a link back to this blog from some of my other blogs as well just for a casual "leg up". This is only useful if they are hosted on another server to this blog because it gets a little watered down otherwise.

One of the most important things I do is try and relate the content on this blog to the theme. That is why I occasionally drop in words like cool, cooler, cold etc.... and instead of planet, I might say earth, world, universe etc.... or even planetary or solar system.

Other words for Guy are bloke, fella, man, guys, people, men etc... I could even talk about fireworks if I wanted to pick up on the popular celebration for the Guy Fawkes Gunpowder plot and bonfires etc.....

So, relevant tags, titles content, some links in with the same or similar words, some links out with similar content etc......

I even have www.coolestguyplanet.com pointing to my www.jamesschramko.com/coolest-guy-planet/ page so that I can start getting some more deep links into themed content sitting just behind the top layer.

I started this thing about a year ago and when I did, I knew nothing about SEO. So if you want to step up and give it a shot go for it!

You don't need the most back links, you don't need a spam page of cloaking or automated content scraping etc...... You just need a nice balanced mix of on-page and off-page content and a little bit of experimentation and hard work to maintain a Page One Google ranking.

Once you do that you will have the proof you need and the confidence to produce your own top Search Engine Optimization related Info Products like the XSP Cheat Sheet (my product) and have 5 Figure Sales launches.

If you like my blog you are welcome to leave comments (and get yourself a backlink!) I do check for spam so don't bother posting silly comments, you are welcome to ask questions.

I also have an Internet Marketing News Blog called www.InternetMarketingSpeed.com and you are welcome to subscribe.

Coolest Guy On The Planet Rocks!

Coolest Guy On The Planet - (Post 160)

This Blog (Coolest Guy On The Planet) is currently 6th and my other page is 7th in Google.

MSN still has me at number 1.

My other (old Blogspot Blog) is 7th in Yahoo for this cool SEO comp.

What is happening at the moment?

Well, I have my SEO Article about the coolest guy on the planet SEO Competition sitting on page 2 of Google (The ezinearticles one) it has had 32 page views, but hopefully more publishers will post it to sites and give it some leverage.

My Blogcatalog blog post is gathering a network of friends all by itself - mostly SEO related marketers.

Peter Drew (the VI guy) is sitting near me - some days he is just a nose in front, and today he is below me - Hi Pete!.

Brad Fallon is first and Russell Brunson is second, and Garrett is still third.

There is some wierd new entrant hovering around but I can't work out what it is or How it is ranking? We will see.

Jon L is on page 2 - his Squidoo lens is going quite well.

I am going to try Peters WP Burner and get some RSS feeding out there.

Based on Google Video being an authority I might submit a video directly to them as well and see what happens.

This Coolest Guy on the Planet SEO Comp / Game is always a great way to learn new stuff about Search Engine behaviour.

    Speak Soon.

    Link Bait - (post 149)

    One cool Porsche Driver!

I know I promised not to put unrelated content on this blog. I even tried (and failed) to post this video on my wordpress blog however it needs a special plugin or something.

Blogger blogs are easier to post video to ( They do own YouTube).

So let's call this awesome Youtube video of a Ruf Porsche 911 doing a lap of the "ring" SEO link bait instead.

Link bait on my coolest guy on the planet blog is designed to make people send the link to there friends or bookmark it.
The more people linking to this post the better because it like a vote of popularity.

So here is the link bait - enjoy (and send your friends!)

    I'm Duplicated ! - (post 142)

I found my blog in the supplemental listings in Google. Perhaps this is where my blog has been taking holidays?

According to some experts this is usually caused by,

    1) Duplicate content
    2) No content
    3) Orphaned web pages.

I have original content, plenty of content, lots of backlinks. In the case of this coolest guy on the planet blog I think it is too similar to my index page.

I have had two pages (from the same domain) listed in the first page of Google for so long that perhaps they would rather just display one.

I am now changing the pages shown to 6 (from 999) to see if this helps get re-indexed.

    Regards

coolest guy on the planet - (post 141)

    Ouch!

Coolest guy on the planet just disapeared, you may not even find this post because when you type "coolest guy on the planet" into Google it does not come up.

I have mentioned this before, the blog dissapears for a day or so and then magically reappears...

My coolest guy on the planet home page is coming 9th - it dropped from 4th.

The index coolest guy on the planet page is more static and is very consistant with rankings.

This coolest guy on the blog moves around a lot because I actively post items here. Whilst I am enjoying very good unique traffic to this blog (the most ever) - I have decided to split the non "coolest guy / SEO " content away to my new James Schramko wordpress blog.

So from now on (to keep the page keywords and search engine optimization terms more topical) I will blog mostly SEO stuff on this coolest guy on the planet, and post other internet marketing etc content on the new blog.

    2) My other concern is the change to Google regarding "googlebombing". I don't see why it should bother this blog because the content on these posts mainly relates to coolest guy on the planet stuff, so any backlinks I have coming to the blog should match with the theme.

If I have been penalized for "google bombing" then I should make a re-appearance soon in the results with the new content structure - including this keyword rich post.

It looks like it is time to dig out IBP and do some content optimization for the coolest guy on the planet.

    coolest guy on the planet is 4th & 5th - (post 138)

Coolest guy on the planet blog and index are 4th and 5th in Google at the moment.

The blog is still PR3 and getting lots of traffic.

The latest tweaks I have made are mainly in having descriptive page descriptions so that more of you click on it. This more or less creates a vote of relevancy every time you click on my coolest guy on the planet blog whenever the search result is presented.

I am also going to be sure to "ping" this post and for the first time add labels to the post (the new blogger allows this).

Happy Australia Day for all you Aussies out there.

    Regards

    James
