coolest guy on the planet

Well I was hanging out with Brad Fallon, Mike Filsaime and a few others today in Las Vegas - they both appear on the first page for "coolest guy on the planet".

We are here to experience Zero G flight - one of the coolest experiences you can do on earth without having to leave the atmosphere.

the Zero G flight is also nicknamed the "vomit comet". I am yet to see how true that is...

Pretty funny - I'll be meeting a few other coolest guys on the planet next week in Las Vegas.

Brad Fallon, Andy Jenkins (the 2nd coolest guy on the planet), Mike Filsaime and I are catching up for a Maverick Adventure with Yanik and a few of his other friends!

The Zero-G flight will see us leaving the earths gravity for brief periods.

I'm really looking forward to the adventure.

Just while I was mucking around with some SEO tactics I took out the top three rankings for "sales letters cold calls" and a page one ranking for the term sales letters cold calls.





Now my objective is to see what happens for the related terms:

"sales letter cold calls" and the unbracketed version - sales letter cold calls. If I want to do that I need to make sure I don't put it too many times on the page (saves it from looking too saturated).

It also helps to throw in some other selling related terms such as marketing and calling prospects etc... This helps the content match the term I want to rank for.

As Marlon mentioned this stuff is really not too hard!

Ok, that was a little shocking for a headline but it got you here after all. I best explain.

"Google Top Ten Rankings" is a recent article by legendary copywriter Marlon Sanders of Design Dashboard fame among other things. I thought it would be fun to hijack a little SEO space for this headline "Sales Letters Cold Calls" since people will be searching for it after the article was published. He makes out the information is shocking and has never been heard before. Hmmm.

Marlon must have been reading the coolest guy on the planet as he has theorized some of the same techniques I have been using right here. He is honest about not being an SEO guy and makes the point that it is not really that hard. So far so good.

Marlon then outlines his SEO blueprint and it is quite a good one.

1. Keyword research
2. Search your topic
3. Search your keyword in quotes
4. Find a phrase with few search results
   
5. Build several web 2.0 sites with same title (I have mentioned all of these and more in prior posts on the coolest guy on the planet blog right here).
6. Digg your post
7. Submit to Propeller and Blog (ping at Pingoat)
8. Twitter your URL - (he theorizes this one)
9. Confirm your top listing after one hour!
10. Add fresh content
    
11. Use onlywire to bookmark the future posts
12. Add video (using URL in video at youtube).

Marlon then discusses avoiding your own websites and then asks SEO people why some of his sites are not in the serps.

My take on the advice is this: Vary the Title Tag a little - if you have too many of the same tags it looks contrived and unnatural. Perhaps that is why some of Marlons properties have been rejected by G**gle. I also do not entirely agree with point ten - it is possible to have a static page stay high in the results - I have proven this in many niches.

The rest of it is all great stuff. There are of course a few other things to do such as link from a forum and articles etc..

Well - I am now ranking two pages on page One of G for the term product launch formula. There are only 459,000 results for that search however there was a huge SEO battle for these terms over the last few weeks.

I guess what I have learnt from that is that my tactics are a little longer term than some of the spike tactics of others. Anyone can rank on the search engines if they use common sense and stick to a recipe. I notice some people are selling similar information that I discuss on this blog for $67 per month.

Another guy is promoting his product as the SEO answer and his model is pretty much 'rip off a genuine product' incuding the videos, the CSS and the words from the orginal page, then spam the search engines with crap (this called splogging). Good one! The funny thing is that he his getting a heros worship about it. Oh well. The market decides I guess.

My plans from here - concentrate on dominating the search engines for the terms I want to own by doing it with genuine original content and long lasting methods.

Well the experiment for product launch formula ended up really well. I managed to help many people get introduced to PLF 2.0 and it was a very profitable sales day at launch. I would not change much in hindsite other than have less concentrated anchor text (less than 30% keywords) and build links a little slower.... If I did that I would not have hit the sandbox at all.

As the search engines will show my domains have risen from the ashes and are ranked number one for the term I was chasing and I have many many listings on the first two pages of Google for many terms.

Now I will start building a list of names from that traffic and recycle it through my newsletter.
If you read all the posts from my campaign below you will learn a bit about HOW I managed to rank for those terms.

I hope you enjoyed this case study and I will keep posting more content for the next experiment. Perhaps I could put the same amount of effort into ranking for coolest guy on the planet one day!
